I've got the feeling that this moron Bolsonaro started as a Trump and will end up as a Ceaușescu. I wouldn't be surprised to see him hanging from a lamppost one sunny day when I open the news. It wouldn't make my day any less sunny either.

Lab-free COVID-19 test trialled in London hospitals

This could be a game changer. One hour test instead of 24-48 tests could be workable at airports. It wouldn't be fun adding 2 hours at an airport to queue up and wait for results, but it might be this or nothing in the near future. Could it be done at the departure airport and any positives pulled off the flight at the gate?

"DnaNudge’s MHRA-approved rapid COVID-19 test is now rolling out in urgent patient care settings across London hospitals.

DnaNudge’s rapid, lab-free COVID-19 test, developed by Imperial College London’s Regius Professor of Engineering Chris Toumazou, offers gold-standard accuracy and sample-to-result in around an hour. The test is now being rolled out in urgent patient care settings following approval for clinical use by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), granted at the end of April after successful patient trials. The DnaNudge test achieves sensitivity of 98% and specificity of 100%."

“It is a lab in a cartridge effectively,” said Chris Toumazou, a professor of engineering at Imperial College who developed the test. “The key is that with this test you go straight from a saliva swap or a nasal swab into the cartridge with no transport and no laboratory.”
“You can even look at such small fragments of the RNA (Ribonucleic acid) that you can check whether a patient is coming out of it or going into COVID,” Toumazou said.

The World Reopens, Despite Skyrocketing Coronavirus Cases

A good read from The New York Times comparing countries and their responces. Worth a read...

LONDON — Two months ago, when there were roughly one million confirmed coronavirus cases and the primal politics of survival was sweeping the world, shutting down was the order of the day.
This week, the number of cases soared past seven million, with 136,000 new infections detected on Sunday alone, the highest single-day total since the pandemic began.

The order of the day? Reopening.
Terrified after watching economies built over the course of decades hollow out in a matter of weeks, countries seem to be saying, in effect: Enough.

This is not the time for any country to take its foot off the pedal,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization, warned at a news conference in Geneva this week. The crisis, he said, is “far from over.”

On Tuesday, the United States’ top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, delivered a grim assessment — he described Covid-19 as his “worst nightmare” — and a warning. “In a period of four months, it has devastated the whole world,” Dr. Fauci said. “And it isn’t over yet.”

True that, except the little virus did two orders of magnitude less devastation than the silly braindead overreaction of governments who completely lost their sense of rationality.

China reports 11 new confirmed, seven asymptomatic COVID-19 cases for June 12

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China reported 11 new COVID-19 cases and seven asymptomatic cases for June 12, the national health authority said on Saturday.

The National Health Commission (NHC) said in a statement that five of the new confirmed patients were so-called imported cases involving travellers from overseas.

The six locally transmitted cases were all in Beijing, the statement said.

The NHC reported seven confirmed cases and one asymptomatic case a day earlier.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in mainland China now stands at 83,075, while the death toll remained unchanged at 4,634. China does not count asymptomatic patients, who are infected with the virus but do not display symptoms, as confirmed cases.

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Beijing district official said on Saturday the district was in "wartime emergency mode" following a spike in novel coronavirus cases centered around a major wholesale market there.

Chu Junwei, an official of Beijing's Fengtai district, said at a briefing that throat swabs from 45 people, out of 517 tested at the district's Xinfadi market, had tested positive for the new coronavirus.
Beijing will suspend sports events and inter-provincial tourism, effective immediately, a city spokesman said at the same briefing.
The spokesman said all six confirmed coronavirus patients in Beijing on Friday had visited the Xinfadi market.
