The word salad about New Zealand is well written, tourism in tatters jobs lost but relief that it didn,t reach disastrous level of virus deaths elsewhere. Trouble is there isnt a single country with disatrous leveld. All articles that avoid stating the deaths using a denominator with the numerator are bollocks. There are 7 billion of us and 1% die of all causes, thats 70000000. 400000 covid deaths worldwide, that,s an increase of about 0.6 % and that assumes the covid deaths are not being over counted in the US and UK which is unlikely.

New Zealand is only good until the airports reopen. It's winter there and normal flu season. Don't celebrate too early.

“...further analysis showed that A-positive participants were at a 45% increased risk for respiratory failure, while individuals with blood group O were at a 35% decreased risk for respiratory failure.

The authors say that early clinical reports have suggested the ABO blood group system is involved in determining susceptibility to COVID-19 and has also been implicated in susceptibility to SARS-CoV-1.”

This is another factor.
Compared to European countries, Cambodia and Thailand have smaller numbers of A-positive type populations.

Yeah, virus free for now, not forever.

Can NZ and Australia afford to operate their own travel bubble for 1 year, to the complete exclusion of all others, which might allow this virus to do it's worse, second wave etc, and perhaps then a vaccine?

Otherwise, the moment those flights start arriving the big will surely follow.

With an anonymous woman in Auckland the last confirmed case, scientists expect to be able to declare next week that the nation is virus-free

As health officials announce each new day of no new Covid-19 cases, social media explodes with New Zealanders celebrating the news.

“That feeling like you got away with something that seemed impossible and you can’t quite believe it even though you want to believe it,” wrote one, on Twitter. “But for an entire country.”

Twenty-two New Zealanders have died of Covid-19, ; thousands have lost their jobs and the nation’s largest export sector, tourism, lies in tatters. But as New Zealanders look to the hundreds of thousands of deaths recorded in other countries, there is a sense that the rest of the world faced a different pandemic, the disastrous scale of which never fully arrived here.

Now, providing there are no new and unexpected cases to marr the country’s 13-day streak of zero fresh instances of Covid-19, scientists say they expect to be able to declare next week that the virus has been eliminated from New Zealand – making it the first country among the OECD group of wealthy nations, and the first country that has recorded more than 100 cases to make such a statement, analysts said.

Yeah, that's great! Now, what's next? Never lift the lock down and stay in a bubble through fear of allowing the wuhan virus to re-enter? How long can they last like that?

Until next summer in time for tourists. Get flu season out of the way. If you want winter sun you'll probably be allowed to travel to Northern Oz (oh the joy).

"Let's not snatch defeat from the jaws of victory" could become the slogan. Can't blame them really as I sit on Leper Island.
