I feel like I have pretty good insight into what is actually happening in China, having seen the insane escalation in not only the numbers but the massive change in public attitude.

There is so much to say about it, I am not really sure where to start but I can list a few observations and if anyone has any questions feel free and I'll respond as best I can. I have also been talking to my Chinese colleagues and people from Hubei province.

1. EVERY SINGLE person in Beijing is wearing a mask no matter where they go.
2. There was the least amount of traffic I've ever seen on the way to the airport (greatly different from previous (CNY) and they have cancelled all the freeway tolls.
3. Whether you believe Beijing actually has the reported "70 cases" or the much more realistic 700 cases, you need to remember at least half of Beijing's 24 million population is travelling due to the holiday, so whichever number you accept, understand that it is only representing half of the Beijing's real population.
4. Medical workers are being infected on a large scale, from the nurses to the head of major departments at top hospitals. (One of the top doctors in Beijing contracted the disease early on when he travelled to Wuhan to observe a patient and did not wear medical goggles...) However, they are not able to voice their concerns being that it is China and they all work for the government, which not only strictly monitors what they are saying on social media but forces them to say certain things.
5. There are several temperature checks/quarantine areas inside the Beijing airport. We saw several people getting turned away, or in some cases hauled away. They are asking people to sign documents related to their previous travel history and checking that against the records on your passport/ID.
6. There were NONE, ZERO temperature checks arriving at PNH. Nothing related to health. My wife who is a medical worker from Cambodia even asked the immigration guy if there were any infrared cameras or anything and his response was "of course there are, you just cannot see them". There are none in PP, however, they do seem to be in SHV and SR.

From the day we heard about the spreading we were extremely cautious, we holed up in our apartment and had virtually no contact outside of receiving grocery deliveries. We decided to come to Cambodia once we realized the government is not going to prevent people from coming back to Beijing, we knew we had to get out. We do understand the potential risk of us travelling to Cambodia but at this point, we do not even know when we will go back to China and we have decided to stay in a hotel instead of family's home and are constantly monitoring our temperatures and our symptoms and rarely going out, we will be doing so for the next ten days, at least.

Sorry if this sounds like insane rambling but it has been a crazy fucking week. There is so much more information I can share but as i said, it is hard to know where to start.

We have never been so happy as when exited immigration at the airport early this morning.
Thanks
BUT as i understand it, you can have it an pass it along BEFORE you show any symptoms
this is the ass kicker, as millions of Chinese left before the area was closed down,(they fucking announced they were shutting down the city BEFORE they actually did it!!) and many more are or were en-route somewhere..So in effect the closed the barn yard door after many left.....
IF only the authorities had announced it 3 weeks ago they might have been better prepared to get a handle on it.

as it seems to kill only the aged and young an they claim it is not as serious as SARS.
i am not as worried

Interesting that, while it has been reported by a forum member that there are no (obvious?) health checks in place for arrivals from China at Phnom Penh International Airport, at the Poipet border crossing the Cambodian authorities are handing out thousands of masks to new arrivals.

Poipet, Cambodia Breaking News: On January 27, 2020 at 07:30, the Poipet International Border Police launched a campaign for national and international tourists, handing out free masks for all travelers at the Banteay Meanchey international check-point between Thailand and Cambodia.

The mass distribution is aimed at helping to prevent respiratory illness (CORONA) as the disease is spreading in several countries around the world.

An expected 15,000 to 18,000 masks per day are expected to be distributed to passengers free of charge until the Health Ministry's announcement of the CORONA virus is clear.

Thailand has its own Unique thai take on the whole thing.
Tourism minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn has told Thai and foreign tourists not to panic regarding the coronavirus outbreak.
He has told the tourists not to believe rumors circulating on social media, reported Daily News.

In particular he has told everyone to carry on spending at places like the big department stores in Thailand, all of which have measures in place to tackle the health emergency.
The media mentioned Paragon, Discovery Center, Siam Center and Icon Siam.

Such places are checking air-con and ozone treatments and have plenty of sterilizing alcohol gel on hand. In addition staff are cleaning handrails, toilet door knobs and other knobs.

Wuhan virus: Singapore to impose 14 days leave of absence for those in schools, healthcare and eldercare who travelled to China

SINGAPORE - With the death toll from the Wuhan virus jumping, and over 2,000 people infected so far, Singapore's multi-ministry task force set up to fight the infectious disease on all fronts here is implementing new measures, from compulsory leave for some people returning from China, to enhanced screening and checks, in efforts to prevent the virus from taking hold in the country.

For one, Singaporeans are now advised to avoid non-essential travel to mainland China.

And from Wednesday (Jan 29), temperature screening at airports will cover all incoming flights, with additional scrutiny on all flights from mainland China, and checks on all passengers with Hubei passports.

There are also measures in place for workers and students returning from mainland China.

Individuals with travel history to China in the last 14 days will have to give health and travel declarations to their respective organisations, and do health monitoring with temperature checks twice a day for 14 days from their return.

People with close contact with vulnerable populations will have 14 days compulsory leave of absence upon return to Singapore, particularly those working in pre-schools, healthcare and the eldercare sectors.

This is expected to affect an estimated 800 students returning from China from around mid-January, who will be asked to stay at home.

At a press conference attended by several fourth-generation ministers on Monday (Jan 27) morning, taskforce co-chair, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong, stressed that the Government would spare no effort to keep Singaporeans safe.

Measures had been stepped up progressively to reduce risk of importation, including temperature monitoring, enhanced border controls and travel advisories.

Doctors were on high alert, he added, noting that there was currently no evidence of community spread in Singapore.

"The situation is rapidly evolving, he said.

"We will institute more measures if necessary."

Hi Dilbert,

have you heard anything about a delay in the starting date for high school students in Beijing and if this applies only to public high schools?

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China’s capital Beijing will delay reopening the city’s kindergartens, schools and universities, state-owned China National Radio (CNR) said on its official page on the microblogging website Weibo on Sunday.

The measures are aimed at preventing the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus, according to CNR. Schools are currently closed for the Lunar New Year holiday.

Separately, the Beijing government said it will not lock down the city, CNR reported.

Officially all of the international schools are able to determine their own start date but I imagine it would be at least until the time used by all the public schools. Which I have read will be AFTER February 17th. Depending on how things go, an early March start seems to be the most plausible.

It's killing the sick and the old! I've not heard anything about the young though, I'm know that a few kids are confirmed infected with the youngest being 8 months old, but as far as I'm aware the youngest death was a 36 year old three days ago. He was in hospital and died from a cardiac arrest.

Right now, anybody with symptoms ranging from the flu to pneumonia to bronchitis etc is being listed as either being a suspected carrier or a carrier.

I would advise quitting rolling news updates for the good of your health and wait a few weeks.

In my opinion it will be a load of bollox.
