Sweden is extremely large with a relatively small population, outside a few urban centers people have been distancing for centuries. Comparing their numbers to densely populated countries is useless.

I can't. And why do you think I can? All I said is comparing Sweden to for instance the UK is useless. The population density per square KM in Sweden is about 25, in the UK it's around 281. Just in London there are more people living closely together than all people in all urban centers in Sweden.

That makes any comparison useless unless you compensate for the enormous space in Sweden.

Add to that many people in Sweden chose to restrict themselves. There are several data sources showing mobility has decreased a lot during the last 10 weeks. If there's no formal measures from the government it doesn't mean people will go by their daily lives as they used to. They didn't.

Yeah, I know the Swedes took a lot upon themselves. Sensible and intelligent. The modelling used by the UK was simply lockdown or normality - 20k deaths v's Catastrophe. We got both. They never even considered just encouraging people to stay home more and avoid crowded places, like the Swedes. They obviously just didn't trust the public to be sensible and intelligent. Now it has cost more than we can afford and people don't want to go back to work. The worse of both worlds.

In Mumbai’s Sion hospital emergency ward there are two people to a bed. Patients, many with coronavirus symptoms and strapped two to a single oxygen tank, were captured lying almost on top of each other, top-to-toe on shared stretchers or just lying on the floor, in footage shared on social media in India this week.

Mumbai, a city of more than 20 million people, is weeks into the pandemic, but with new cases showing no sign of slowing down the city’s already weak healthcare system appears to be on the brink of collapse. State hospitals such as Sion, overcrowded in normal times, are overrun. With frontline doctors and nurses falling sick with the virus in their droves, it is also leading to a shortage of medical staff.

“The volume and density of our population in Mumbai makes it very difficult to see how we will get out of the other side of this peak,” said Manish Shetty, a doctor who works on the Covid-19 ward in Guru Nanak hospital in Mumbai. “Definitely there is a fatigue setting in from all frontline workers, especially because there is a very high chance of healthcare workers getting infected.”

He added: “There is definitely a shortage of beds for critical care. There is a lot of infrastructure and planning which is happening, but the magnitude of the cases is overwhelming us all.”

MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte announced on Thursday (May 28) that he is lifting one of the strictest and longest lockdowns enforced in South-east Asia, as the Philippines pivots to rebuilding an economy devastated by the coronavirus pandemic.

“Let us move to the so-called new normal. Let’s see what develops ahead,” Mr Duterte said at a meeting of his ministers.

He said this as health officials reported earlier in the day the largest number of new cases reported in a single day since the virus was first detected in the country, and experts warned easing the lockdown is premature as it has not led to a "discernible" drop in infections.

The Health Ministry said in a bulletin 539 new infections and 17 more deaths were recorded, bringing total infections to 15,588. Deaths have reached 921. More than half of the new cases were in Metro Manila.

Health Minister Park Neung-hoo announced on Thursday that strict social distancing rules have been reimposed in Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi Province until 14 June to contain any further spread of Covid-19.

It comes less than a month since the nationwide lockdown ended on 6 May. South Korea has since lifted some restrictions gradually, but a resurgence of the virus may threaten to put more areas back under lockdown.
