Following the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak - News and Discussion

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

Only 87 deaths now - 10% less that Australia's total - per day.

I see all these posts (not necessarily yours) singing the praises of Sweden when in fact it is turning into a catastrophe.
All those ekonomy boosters, and those who are desperate to fly at any cost to the aged, totally ignore the "inconvenient" OZ and NZ success story - simply because it shows how totally unnecessary is the horrific death toll everywhere else in the 1st world.

- "Sweden nears 'horrifying' death toll of 3,000 from coronavirus with 87 new fatalities, including a child under ten
State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell called it 'a horrifyingly large number'Sweden admits a 'big failure' to prevent elderly deaths"

- Sweden forced to admit significant under-counting of coronavirus deaths. 30 April 2020
Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare released figures Tuesday revealing that the death toll from the coronavirus has been significantly underestimated in public figures.

- 22 top scientists slam the governments approach
- Sweden deaths much higher than neighbouring nations. eg 5x that of Norway pp/pop
- Death rate worse than USA
Albs, I don't see as OZ and NZ success story as inconvenient (I have no predetermined narrative, just calling things as I see them), but let's not forget that there's many other parts of the world that have not done too badly from this. Is this just due to NZ and OZ's brilliant handling of the crisis ? I'm not sure. What have they done exactly ? What have the US and European nations done so badly exactly ? There are clearly some important variables here we just don't understand yet.

Take weather patterns into account? All areas that have been hit hard were so in winter / early spring. OZ and NZ just entered autumn. Let's see what will happen there over the next 6 months.

I don't have time right now Foreigner, could you please do the calculation for me
97 deaths, pop 25 mill.

There are muddled, late, poorly implemented "lockdowns - and there are timely, well executed suites of effective measures.
The figures speak for each countries effectiveness.

Anyway - it will all come out in the wash before too long.
and i feel for all you folk where the horse has already bolted.

ps, i just saw Kammekors last post, and i do acknowledge the validity of that point.
At least we have bought ourselves time to prepare as best as can be possible. There is absolutely no doubt we would not be in that position if we had adopted the Swedish model.
5x the rate of next door Norway. THAT says it all.

Geographically isolated New Zealand is one of the easiest countries in the world to lockdown. Block all passenger aircraft and cruise liners. Remove any sick from the community and test their contacts and the deal is done. I think the long economic lockdown was a bit over the top, but people don't mind. They gave my brother $7000 and my son $4000, but how long can this go on for? So far Ardern is looking golden, but the exit strategy is going to be real test of leadership.

Covid-19 found in semen of infected men, say Chinese doctors
Study based on small number of patients opens up chance of sexual transmission
Reuters
Thu 7 May 2020 19.54 BST

Chinese researchers who tested the sperm of men infected with Covid-19 found a minority had the new coronavirus in their semen, opening up a small chance the disease could be sexually transmitted, scientists have said.

A study by doctors at China’s Shangqiu municipal hospital of 38 men hospitalised with the disease found that six of them(16%), tested positive for Sars-CoV-2 in their semen.

The researchers said that while the findings were preliminary, and based on only a small number of infected men, more research is needed to see whether sexual transmission might play a role in the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Further studies are required with respect to the detailed information about virus shedding, survival time and concentration in semen,” the team wrote in a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

“If it could be proved that Sars-CoV-2 can be transmitted sexually ... [that] might be a critical part of the prevention,” they said, “especially considering the fact that Sars-CoV-2 was detected in the semen of recovering patients.”

Independent experts said the findings were interesting but should be viewed with caution and in the context of other small studies that have not found the new coronavirus in sperm.

I agree that those are great figures.

HOWEVER....admittedly as well as having an excellent 276 cases per million (Spain have over 5000, Belgium, USA, Italy over 4000, UK and France over 3000), you also have a death per case ratio of 71 whereas all the worst affected countries in Europe are under 10. You have a pretty high testing per million number of 29,000 which gives some credence your cases per million figure, however the cases data is generally pretty dodgy. What's clear is that the virus is much less deadly in Aus than in Europe.

With regards to lockdown, I have no idea how effective Belgium's was, but I re-iterate that they are the WORST affected country out of everyone and they locked down very very early. Not saying that lockdown isn't beneficial (although the mayor of NY recently advised of his surprise that 66% of hospital cases in a tested sample were of people who had stayed at home), but I think there's more to it than that. If I understand correctly, Brunei has not had a lockdown and yet it has similar cases/pop ratio to Aus (322/m) and a better death rate (2/m). Qatar conversely locked down very very early (when it had 8 cases a day and 0 deaths), and has the highest case/pop ration of any country in the world (excluding san marino, Andorra and Vatican city).

Also Albs, Taiwan had only 6 deaths (not 6 deaths per million, 6 deaths) and never went into lockdown.

Staff members from both Trump and Pence’s circles test positive:

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/08/vice-pr ... virus.html

Previously staff members didn’t wear masks and were tested once a week. Now staffers will wear masks and be tested daily.
