Is the stereotype true about them being unhygienic? I personally have never known any French people, weirdly enough, but if you aren't hygienic or mindful of germs, you'd definitely be more likely to catch a very contagious illness.

You and @rexwell ("French are known to surrender easily"!) need to stop being rude about the French!

Speaking of Sweden, here's Prof Johan Giesecke, former State Epidemiologist of Sweden, asks Australia how it plans to lift its lockdown without deaths. Interviewed by Sky News Australia. Sweden took a different path that will, he says, lead to the same result as the lockdown nations but with much less social and economic upheaval.

I have been liking the Swedish approach for as long as it looked good, and that is from the start. The problem now is to get governments to adopt it.

I think they will, (they have no choice really) but they will pretend that they thought of it. Armed with their new raft of rules and regulations of hygiene and social distancing (just like Sweden) the death rate will be kept under control and they will hail it as a great government success.

They will never admit that they could have done it that way all along and without the disastrous economic shock of a shut down.

The coronavirus map of Europe makes one thing clear: the richer nations of western Europe have suffered more from the virus than countries in the eastern half of the EU, almost without exceptions.

Comparing figures from different countries can be fraught with difficulty, and many factors can potentially skew the numbers. But the comparison between western Europe on the one hand, and central and eastern Europe on the other, shows a difference in coronavirus rates that is too stark to ignore.

Even the worst-hit central and eastern European countries have infection and death rates per million inhabitants much lower than western European nations, and in some the statistics are truly remarkable: Slovakia has recorded just 1,413 confirmed cases and 25 deaths. Neighbouring Austria, widely regarded as having tackled the challenge of the virus successfully, nevertheless has more than 10 times the number of infections and 20 times the deaths as Slovakia, with a population less than twice the size.

if someone can catch it, recover

Probably part of the reason, plus higher population and a higher density of people living in the cities.

Add India , and Bangladesh into the equation and see how it looks.
