Well, there is no real lockdown here anyway, is there? People are still going about their life, businesses, apart from some bars and clubs, are not being ordered to shut. Malls, shops etc are open. No alcohol ban, no curfew, no restrictions on travelling anymore...
The only reason why some places are closed is because they have no customers.

The increasingly dire economic situation in Cambodia is because of demand destruction, not because of any local lockdown measures.

Eighty-one people on the Greg Mortimer cruise ship, which has been stranded off the coast of Uruguay for almost two weeks and has over 90 Australians on board, have tested positive for coronavirus.

In a statement on Monday the cruise ship owners, Australian company Aurora Expeditions, said two crew members and one passenger had been taken off the ship which had been on an Antarctic expedition.

Over 120 other passengers and staff were tested for COVID-19, with 81 passengers testing positive and 45 testing negative.

Another 90 test results are expected to be processed over the next 12 to 24 hours.

After an ill-fated Antarctic expedition in which 60% of passengers and crew contracted coronavirus and spent a month stranded off the coast of South America, the successful repatriation of 132 tourists from a Australian cruise ship seemed like a rare happy ending.

But what should have been a peaceful epilogue in which the crew of the Greg Mortimer sailed safely home has become a gruesome sequel of sickness and panic – with the added possibility of a legal battle in Miami courts.

In recent days, tensions aboard the stranded ship reached a breaking point over allegations that the ship’s operators and captain pressured the chief medical officer to mislead authorities in Uruguay about the health situation onboard.

Emails seen by the Guardian appear to show that two companies associated with the Greg Mortimer – Miami-based crewing company CMI/Sunstone and the Australian cruise operator Aurora Expeditions – urged Dr Mauricio Usme to downplay the severity of the outbreak.

A doctor from a third company linked to the vessel – the Fort Lauderdale medical company Vikand – also allegedly suggested Usme should play down the health situation onboard.

The ship remains anchored 20km off the coast of Uruguay. Thirty-three members of its 85-strong crew – including Dr Usme – have tested positive for coronavirus, and one has died of Covid-19.

“More will continue getting sick,” Usme told the Guardian over a tenuous WhatsApp connection.

“We’re all exposed to the risk of potential death as long as we remain onboard, because having coronavirus is like having a timebomb ticking inside you that could go off at any moment.”

Demand destruction:

When you remove demand for a product or service.
The world goes into lockdown and clothes stores are non-essential business. So no one buys clothes. The stores don’t buy stock. The factories can’t get materials or sell their products. Workers are laid off. People who sell stuff outside the factory gates stop as no customers. All those workers spend their wages in the immediate area. Now they have far less money to spend so the businesses they buy from do less trade.

Repeat this for:
Hotels
Restaurants
Bars
Street vendors in general.


And that’s what he means by demand destruction.

More than 10 times as many people in Germany may have been infected with coronavirus than thought, researchers have said, as Italy led swathes of Europe out of lockdown and officials said the continent’s outbreak was mostly past its peak.

Researchers from Bonn University said on Monday their preliminary study, based on field work in the town of Gangelt in Heinsberg municipality, which had one of the country’s highest death tolls, showed the risk of infection by asymptomatic carriers.

The researchers concluded from a random sample of 919 people that about 15% of Gangelt’s population had been infected, with a fatality rate of 0.37%. Extrapolating nationwide, they said about 1.8 million people living in Germany may have contracted the virus, against 160,000 confirmed cases so far.

About one in five of those who were infected showed no symptoms, they said, underlining the importance of physical distancing and basic hygiene to keep the disease at bay.

“Every supposedly healthy person we encounter can unknowingly carry the virus,” said Martin Exner, the head of the university’s institute for hygiene and public health and a co-author of the study. “We must be aware of this and act accordingly.”
