Following the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak - News and Discussion

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

it's possibly all the tar in the lungs stopping the virus
(also decreased ace2 receptor expression in smokers)
nicotine patches seem a bit of a desperate shot-in-the-dark to me

Does this ever happen with previously known flu strains?
Yes.
But as Cv is so new, they do not know if this syndrome for Cv is reinfection, lingering dormant infection or faults in the testing.
Reinfection by many influenzas strains is quite common. Even the exact same strains. Often very soon after original infection.
One more thing that makes relying solely on herd immunity an even more a reckless gamble.
If it walks and quacks like a flu, it’s a flu.
To me, a reckless gamble is killing the economy. I know you are ok with it. It’s alright, i am past arguing about this. Damage has been done, got to adapt to living in the new world.

Coronavirus latest: Australia angers China by demanding international probe into pandemic origins

Australia is demanding an international probe into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic.
Canberra’s push for an independent review of the start and spread of the pandemic, including the response of the World Health Organisation (WHO), appears to have got a warm response from President Donald Trump. The US leader has already lashed out at China’s dubious initial response to the building epidemic - while seeking to deflect attention from his own lamentable performance.

quick update on Italy:

Italy has finally reached the ZERO line in terms of variance in NET number of corona patients

Image

This graph shows the NET number of active cases (thats is total number of postive tested people minus dead people minus recovered)

source:https://www.corriere.it/speciale/salute ... us-italia/

Remember that Italy has put in action the most severe restrictons of all countries affected (basically house arrest)

NEW ZEALAND UPDATE:
1:59 pm today
Covid-19: Three new cases in NZ, two further deaths reported

Three new cases of Covid-19 have been reported in New Zealand in the past 24 hours, with the Health Ministry also confirming two further deaths from the coronavirus.

Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said there were two new confirmed cases and one new probable case of Covid-19.

Despite the three new cases, the total number of confirmed and probable Covid-19 cases remains at 1451, Dr Bloomfield said.

"There were three cases we reported yesterday who were confirmed cases off the Greg Mortimer ship, where people had been repatriated from Uruguay, however we understand that their original testing was done in Uruguay and we are checking with the authorities there as to whether they have already reported them to the WHO to make sure the World Health Organisation totals are accurate."

Twenty-nine people have recovered from the coronavirus in the past day.

The Vietnamese coronavirus enigma, seen by the French press:
Zéro mort du coronavirus : comment expliquer le mystère vietnamien ?
Zero deaths from coronavirus: how to explain the Vietnamese enigma?
Vietnam is an exceptional case in the global spread of coronavirus: although the country shares a frontier with China, no deaths have been reported, and only 260 individual contaminations have been reported. We will explain why, and -spoiler- it's not because the authorities are manipulating the statistics...

Summary of the article in English:
1: Vietnam went in early and went in hard. Schools were closed on 20 January and the frontier with China was closed on 1 February.
2: Coronavirus cases were systematically tested and traced, and all contacts were placed in mandatory quarantine.
3: Specific outbreak areas were placed in quarantine lockdown to prevent travel transmission.

No. That's not what the article says at all.
I get that some posters are for or against the different ways of coping with coronavirus, but your every post says the same thing, like a bot. Everything you don't agree with is BS. Some would call that spamming or trolling.
If you don't understand the article, then don't comment. It was posted to provide information with a different perspective. We have some French readers here who may be interested. We have tried to give a rough translated summary for our English readers.

The Ministry of Public Health has issued a new announcement, defining five more countries as dangerous communicable disease areas for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The "Announcement Regarding the Areas Outside the Kingdom Which Are Considered Dangerous Communicable Disease Areas for COVID-19” is in effect from 23 April 2020 onwards, after it was published in the Royal Gazette on 22 April 2020.

In this announcement, the five countries include Malaysia, the Kingdom of Cambodia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, the Republic of Indonesia, and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

The Ministry of Public Health in early March 2020 defined four countries as dangerous communicable disease areas. The four countries include the Republic of Korea, the People’s Republic of China (including Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions), the Republic of Italy, and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Interesting that NO Western countries other than Italy, make the list

The Thai Ministry of Public Health has put Cambodia on a list of "dangerous communicable disease areas for COVID-19".
While Indonesia and Malaysia have identified thousands of cases, the interesting countries are the remaining ones on the list:
Myanmar claims only 127 infections, Cambodia is steady at 122 since almost 10 days and Laos has a mere 19.

Would these excellent numbers be true and credible, one could really triumphantly proclaim:
""Cambodia appears to have go the COVID 19 situation under control" as the Khmer Times did recently."

IMPORTANT
be it true or not .......its Thailand

The announcement makes the re-opening of borders with the neighbouring countries for trade and travel unlikely in the short-term. It would also make a resumption of flights to and from these countries unlikely to begin again soon.
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Special Report: As virus advances, doctors rethink rush to ventilate
Silvia Aloisi, Deena Beasley, Gabriella Borter, Thomas Escritt, Kate Kelland

17 Min Read

BERLIN (Reuters) - When he was diagnosed with COVID-19, Andre Bergmann knew exactly where he wanted to be treated: the Bethanien hospital lung clinic in Moers, near his home in northwestern Germany.

The clinic is known for its reluctance to put patients with breathing difficulties on mechanical ventilators - the kind that involve tubes down the throat.

The 48-year-old physician, father of two and aspiring triathlete worried that an invasive ventilator would be harmful. But soon after entering the clinic, Bergmann said, he struggled to breathe even with an oxygen mask, and felt so sick the ventilator seemed inevitable.

Even so, his doctors never put him on a machine that would breathe for him. A week later, he was well enough to go home.

Bergmann’s case illustrates a shift on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, as doctors rethink when and how to use mechanical ventilators to treat severe sufferers of the disease - and in some cases whether to use them at all. While initially doctors packed intensive care units with intubated patients, now many are exploring other options.
