Following the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak - News and Discussion

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

Found this .. see link below

PS, my view, the economy is to serve the people - despite our governments and BigBiz convincing most of us that it is the other way round these days.
Govs everywhere are pushing back on the epidemiologists call for stronger measures - because they work for biz interests, basically.
I don't believe in tens, thousands of extra deaths in order to limit damage to "the economy".
Sacrificing our old and sick for it. But that is just my personal point of view.

Yes I saw this article, but I don’t think it addresses my point.
Obviously, as we test more people, we should expect cases to rise. If we tested nobody then we’d have no confirmed cases, right?
If you look at the stats, it is almost exclusively western, and the more developed East Asian countries (with the exception of Iran) who are showing the most cases. This makes perfect sense, as they are the only ones who have the resources and facilities to properly test any significant number of people.
The point is, that the virus doesn’t wait for someone to test positive before it kills them, it just does, so if it is spreading as rapidly as they say, and is as deadly as they say, we should be seeing scores of sick people in poorer countries flooding into hospitals and dying in the streets already, regardless of the number of confirmed cases on the books. I don’t see that in Thailand, and my friends in Cambodia say they don’t see that there either. With all the social media out there these days, wouldn’t we hear about packed hospitals sending people home to the provinces to die in bed? Or should I believe that it’s being suppressed, as some conspiracy theorists have told me?

It’s a sad reality, but tens of thousands die from the common flu every year, and we have come to see it as a natural part of life. People are saying that this is different/more contagious/more deadly than that, but only as the numbers are continuously revised, will we see the true statistics. When I speak of the effects on the economy, I am not referring to Fortune 500 companies, or millionaire CEOs losing their stock value, I’m talking about the normal people who rely on the free flow of goods and services to survive. Regardless of whether you live under capitalism, communism, socialism, or any other system, you still live within some kind of economy, and when it crashes, the people at the bottom hurt the most.
It’s quite reasonable for one to assume that this virus could become endemic, in which case we will have to decide whether to adapt to life under constant lock down, or let the herd become immune, and unfortunately, a small percentage die.

Either way - over the next few months we are going to find out the hard way.

one small piece of good news from yesterday evening.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins indicated that they believe the virus is NOT mutating similar to the flu. What that means is that a single vaccine COULD be developed to fight/stop the virus.

Now, of course - Could and Will are two different things. But if they are correct, this is absolutely good news for the world as having the flu plus another virus 10-20 times as deadly would be dreadful.

Now we just have to hope our scientists can develop a vaccine.

Yes, it's for real. It's only saying that beer gardens in Cambodia are to be closed, as already mentioned in the thread where this news belongs: newsworthy/information-coronavirus-camb ... ml#p407522

But I guess there are some people who want to stir the pot by posting an announcement in Khmer only without any further explanation and a phrase like "Is this for real?"

The problem with this virus vs. the ordinary flu is that it spreads more rapidly than the flu AND the increased percentage of victims needing ventilators and needing them for a longer period of time.

To recap, it spreads way faster than the flu. It doesn’t kill immediately. Instead it causes worsening breathing problems which needs a ventilator. So more will need ventilators for a longer period of time to recover than the flu. This one two combo leads to Italy which is running out of ventilators. And running out of the things associated with ventilators, such as intensive care units, and medical personnel.

As to the OP that just says let grandma die. It doesn’t kill grandma quick. It kills grandma slowly. She suffocates to death over hours to days, gasping for each breath, slowly turning blue. And everyone with grandma suffers along with her as she dies. And glaring all the time at the person who condemned grandma to this suffering.

What will slay this beast is effective treatment, mass testing, and the eventual vaccine. Several drugs in world wide clinical trials, testing kits are rolling out (with a home test and results that only take a few hours soon) - aka same day result testing, and the latest from John Hopkins - the virus doesn’t mutate like the flu. Mass immunization in the future.

The worldwide response has been nothing short of amazing.

Jjust to clarify the mutation thing (see below)
basically; it is relatively stable, which is excellent news
but it has mutated to a small degree, and could mutate further -
but that is just a minor quibble to your excellent summary, Nuke ^^^

.. there are only around four to ten genetic differences between the coronavirus strains that have infected Americans and those of the original virus in Wuhan.
“That’s a relatively small number of mutations for having passed through a large number of people,” Peter Thielen, a Johns Hopkins molecular geneticist, told the Post. “At this point, the mutation rate of the virus would suggest that the vaccine developed for SARS-CoV-2 would be a single vaccine, rather than a new vaccine every year like the flu vaccine.”

Rather, a potential coronavirus vaccine would act more like those for the measles or chickenpox, in which one shot grants immunity for a substantial amount of time.

According to the current research, the virus that causes COVID-19 has a low “error rate,” meaning that its pace of mutation remains slow despite its rapid spread. Because it remains more or less stable as it travels through hundreds of thousands of patients, researchers state that it is less likely to become more dangerous (or less) as it spreads. “The virus has not mutated to any significant extent,” University of Iowa virologist Stanley Perlman said. “Just one ‘pretty bad’ strain for everybody so far. If it’s still around in a year, by that point we might have some diversity.”

I know about at least one hospital in the Netherlands which tested their (a-symptomatic) staff about 2 weeks ago and found 5% of their staff were infected. Research of the genome showed they were infected with a different strain than the sick in the hospital.
?????
Do you have any more info on this, please K?

It seems to fly in the face of other recent, high level research which shows very little mutation of Covid-19
and i can find no other references to "different strains"
Not saying you are wrong.

3,600 dead in Spain. So quickly.

which has almost zero pandemic suppression measures in place
