Coronavirus Updates: Italy Reports 650 Cases And 17 Deaths
February 27, 2020 1:36 PM ET

Updated at 3:45 p.m. ET

Italy's number of COVID-19 coronavirus cases spiked by more than 50% in just 24 hours and now stands at 650, the Italian Ministry of Health says, adding that 17 people have died from the respiratory virus. More than 400 of the cases are in the hard-hit Lombardy region, where some towns are under a lockdown.

Nearly 250 of the people who were infected are currently in the hospital, including 56 patients who are in intensive care, the Italian ministry says, citing a Thursday afternoon update from Angelo Borrelli, commissioner for the coronavirus emergency. Another 284 people who have been infected are in home isolation to try to stop the coronavirus from spreading further.

The outbreak of COVID-19 in Italy led the U.S. State Department to add concerns about the virus to its travel advisory for Italy this week. The advisory stands at Level 2: "exercise increased caution" – one level short of "reconsider travel."

Alarmed by the virus's potential impact on its economy, Italy's government is urging foreign media to reassure people around the world that it's safe to visit Italy.

"Tourism is already taking a big hit, with a surge in hotel cancellations," NPR's Sylvia Poggioli reports from Rome, "and several American study-abroad programs have shut down."

Warning against the dangers of spreading fake news about the public health crisis, Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio told a gathering of foreign press that the economic damage from an "epidemic" of bad information will do more harm than the virus.

Poggioli adds, "Italian officials also stress that Italy has done much more extensive screening for the virus than any other European country – which may explain why its caseload numbers are so high."

Concerns about spreading the COVID-19 virus have also forced dramatic changes at the highest levels of Italian soccer. Several Serie A games were recently canceled — and at least five matches will be played in closed stadiums, with no fans in attendance.

First British coronavirus fatality as cruise ship passenger dies

A British man has died after being infected with coronavirus while in quarantine in Japan on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, Japanese media reports.
He is the first Briton to die from the virus.
Asahi News, Kyodo News and NHK cited Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in announcing the man's death.
The man was one of four Britons who had to remain in Japan after dozens more, who had tested negative for COVID-19, were evacuated to the UK last week following a fortnight on the coronavirus-stricken ship in Yokohama.

Maybe Cambodia has already figured out that this is like trying to stop the wind. Resistance is futile!

Accept it, it's going affect us all in one way or another.

Either you live, or you die.

Be prepared!!!

These articles never seem to mention the global death toll, which seems to still be under 3,000. This relatively LOW number does not fit into the globalist agenda that they are trying to push.

At least 210 people in Iran have died as a result of the new coronavirus disease, sources in the country's health system have told BBC Persian.

Most of the victims are from the capital, Tehran, and the city of Qom, where cases of Covid-19 first emerged.

The figure is six times higher than the official death toll of 34 given by the health ministry earlier on Friday.

Mexico just reported its first case and the person infected had just returned from Italy last week.

85,176 infected
2,919 deaths
39,416 recovered
61 Countries, ( nearly 1/3rd of the total countries)

Cambodia is not the only country in South East Asia to declare zero cases of the Covid-19 virus. Concerns are being raised about the standards of virus testing in Indonesia. Officially, so far all lab tests conducted in Indonesia have returned negative results.
These concerns on testing conditions are also applicable to Cambodia.

Concerns raised over Indonesia's lab tests as country reports 0 coronavirus cases
February 27, 2020The Jakarta Post/Asia News Network

JAKARTA - Concerns about how the Indonesian government is handling the coronavirus outbreak have grown, as none of the 132 Indonesian lab tests for the virus came back positive as of Wednesday (Feb 26).

This week, a hospital in Semarang, Central Java, and another in Batam, Riau Islands, each reported the death of a patient who had symptoms similar to the new coronavirus. Both patients' tests came back negative, officials said.

The patient in Semarang, an Indonesian national aged 37, died not of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) but of bronchopneumonia, said Kariadi General Hospital medical and nursing director Agoes Oerip Poerwoko on Wednesday.

"The patient had tested negative for the coronavirus based on an observation from the Health Research and Development Agency (Balitbangkes) in Jakarta. Balitbangkes did the examination," Dr Agoes said.

On Wednesday, the Batam Health Agency reported the death of a 61-year-old Singaporean man. He went to the emergency room of a private hospital with symptoms consistent with those of the coronavirus on Feb 20.

The private hospital sent him to Batam's referral hospital for the coronavirus after the doctor found he had fever and shortness of breath.

The agency, however, said he died of "another illness", not Covid-19, because the patient's test results for the virus came back negative.

The diplomatic community in Jakarta and public health experts, however, have raised concerns about the accuracy of the lab tests.

A leaked document circulated throughout the diplomatic community in Jakarta and obtained by the Sydney Morning Herald on Wednesday warns of diplomats' "critical" concerns about Indonesia's handling of the coronavirus.

The document instructs diplomats to provide messages such as "we believe it is critical for your government to be actively conducting case detection", the Herald reported.

Another point was "many hospitals do not have adequate PPE (personal protective equipment), not enough isolation beds, and specimen transportation is inadequate", according to the Herald.

"The reference to inadequate specimen transportation reflects concerns that some of the specimens tested for coronavirus may not have been properly refrigerated in transit," the report said.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) states that each of the specimens should be stored and shipped at 4 deg C if they will reach the laboratory in less than 72 hours, and at -20 deg C, or ideally -80 deg C, on dry ice or liquid nitrogen if they will reach the laboratory in more than 72 hours.

A microbiology researcher from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Mr Sugiyono Saputra, suggested Indonesian health authorities send samples from suspected coronavirus patients to the WHO-appointed referral laboratories for confirmation amid growing scepticism at home.

"By doing so, we can evaluate our testing capacity. We can also take required countermeasures if some of the samples eventually test positive," he said, adding that referral laboratories were spread across 15 countries, including Australia, Thailand and neighbouring Singapore.

He warned against complacency in handling the deadly virus, as many things could go wrong during the sample-testing process. "(Errors) can result either from the tools or the humans that perform the testing."

Dr Samsuridjal Djauzi, an immunology expert at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, said not all tests were 100 per cent accurate. The results depend on "how (testers) take, store and send the specimens. They also depend on the testing tools".

A false result - positive or negative - can occur if there is an error in the procedure.
