If you were to tell the story of humanity to an alien race, much of it would involve conflicts, wars and genocides. It is undoubtably one of the fundamental aspects of our species. Whilst wars and conflicts may have become more regional over the past few decades, this is a blink of an eye in human history, and has lulled us into a false sense that somehow, wars are the exception rather than the rule. Nothing could be further from the truth. For almost all of human history, at least since civilisations started to become a thing, wars have been the rule, not the exception. It would be remarkable for a man for live his entire life and not be expected to go to war at least once.

As Douglas Murray rightly points out, there have been, and continue to be, regional conflicts all over the middle east, with countless deaths involving muslims killing other muslims, but nobody cares about that.

The sad truth is that even when this Israeli / Palestinian conflict is over, even when the Russian / Ukraine war is settled, there will be another war just around the corner, and another one after that. There is a subconscious belief that once one war is settled, everything will be fine again. It won't. It never will be. War is a never ending cycle and a fundamental part of what it is to be human, and now that we have built a system where many people profit from the industrial military complex, so that war has become a business, the spin-cycle of wars will only ever rotate faster.

Of course it is terrible, awful, for those innocent people caught up in it - whatever side they are on. Even soldiers - who are almost always young, gullible men who are - as Elon Musk so perfectly put it - killing other young men who don't know each other, for the sake of old men who do - are merely following orders either blindly, or based on misinformation that is fed to them. Young, gullible men being told to risk their lives to enrich old, manipulative men.

War has always been with us and always will be. You will either be one of the lucky ones who has to fight but manages to survive, one of the very lucky ones who can live your entire life without putting it at risk because of war, or one of the unlucky ones who loses their life fighting for something someone else has told you to fight for. Often in ignorance. And always on their behalf.
