It's been completely gutted. The spire has collapsed inside the building. Stain glassed windows all gone. Everything inside is reported as destroyed. It was undergoing renovations so hopefully much of the moveable artefacts will have been removed for safe storage.

In a few hours when first light appears in Paris the full extent will be revealed and it wont be good.

And all during holy week. All that prayer and God does this. Too soon?

one of my favorite places in Paris,
a tragedy to survive 2 world wars an succumb to a fire from inside.
Seems it went up very fast

Is this the only recent cathedral fire in Europe?

Some English guy in Paris called into a UK radio station and said there have been a spate of vandalism and arson attacks "that the media have been covering up" He got short shrift from the presenter but good old RT have a story on it:

I'm not trying to speculate here, just posting what I have heard. The chances are it was good old fashioned negligence and a lot of bad luck. I can't beleive that such a irreplaceable and iconic building would not have 24 hour security with an array of emergency action plans in place. Let's see how this plays out.

Well, their PM was inside it earlier today so it must be pretty safe.

The roof was made from 28ha of oak. Around 800 years old;must have been like tinder, so would make sense if that was most of the blaze.
