Easy to survive WW2 when you capitulate rather than fight. That's the main reason the French capitulated, to save the Parisian architecture.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Tue Apr 16, 2019 9:39 am one of my favorite places in Paris,
a tragedy to survive 2 world wars an succumb to a fire from inside.
Seems it went up very fast
To quote an historic source..
"By the 6th of June of 1940, French leaders had to surrender and Paris was declared an “open city” by General Hering, the French military governor. Allied forces and French troops withdrew. They did not want a violent battle, nor Paris to be destructed."

Philippe Petit.
This guy walked on a wire above Notre Dame, Notre Dame burns down.
This guy walked on a wire above the World Trade Center, the WTC collapses.
Where would you like him to walk on his wire, any suggestions ?

Make no mistake, this was not an accident. It is an attack on the west and Christianity.tightenupvolume1 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 16, 2019 11:27 pm maybe they could put a dome on it when its rebuilt it will save the trouble of doing it in 30 years time when it becomes a mosque

The "Open City" is a very civilised concept. When the Yanks capitulated in Laos (& Cambodia & Vietnam) and deserted their allies/clients, Vientiane survived because the French were civilised, and smart, enough to have had it declared an Open City.
The US of course did not survive WWII, they thrived - because they did not come in until so very late in the piece after making a Motza selling arms to everybody.
Not a good day to putting shit on the french TOG.

Like many posters, you do not read back and see where members stand on certain issues.
I am a Francophile and have mentioned it many times. I love France and spend much time travelling there. I lived and worked in Paris for several years and If I could be bothered to improve my accent (horriblement anglais), I would be considered fluent in French.
What I quoted is historic fact and has nothing to do with the tragedy that took place. To say it survived WW2 was misleading without explaining why.

You mean it was the same man who burnt 3 black churches in Louisiana in the past 2 weeks? Holden Mathews, son of a deputy sheriff of Landry Parish. Those pesky white nationalists !!!RickyBobby wrote: ↑Wed Apr 17, 2019 3:11 amMake no mistake, this was not an accident. I know you are a civilised man TOG, deep down. I have picked that up.TOG wrote: ↑Wed Apr 17, 2019 3:19 amLike many posters, you do not read back and see where members stand on certain issues.

I also appreciated you bring up the Open City history thing, as it is a relevant factor in Notre dame getting thru WWII.
It was the word "capitulate" that sent me off punching.
I normally wake up and have my first predawn coffee to the warm-and-cuddly tunes of rickybobbie.
Instead, this morning, i read your post first.
So I jumped at the chance to revisit the good ol' days before joining this forum - and have a quick gnarly little
punch-up before breakfast. Thanks for that, i feel much better now.
Best....
