UK News, Updates and Discussion

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

Long live the great british pub. :beer3:
The Great British Pubs are closed from what I heard. :(
NOT for much longer, Mr Moy.

From April 12 pubs will open for outdoor service only, on socially distanced tables and ordering only from the seated position (and paying every time - so don't expect it to be quick). Permission to go to the bathroom can be made by reserving a 4 minute time slot on their App. (I might of made up that bit up, but a formal waiting system could easily be dreamt up by some fool).

This unbridled joy may be experienced by yourself or up to 5 non-bubble friends or even more if they are not from the same household.

There is no need for a substantial meal.

Even with this shitshow, they will all be booked solid. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that if you want a table you'll have to book. The tables will all be filled, come rain or shine. I very much doubt they will allow you to wait around for a table to become free.
one of our boozers has just sorted the beer garden out and said its first come first serve

I reckon that will be the deal with most beer gardens. I hope so as I don't fancy having to phone and book ahead just to go for a couple of pints. I am off to Devon at the end of the month hopefully it will have sorted itself out by then. I am resigned to the fact that going out for a pint will not be back to normal this year. Plastic sheeting along the bar, social distancing, limited numbers etc will carry on for a while yet :(

Latest video from the excellent Dr John Campbell in the UK. Btw, he has worked in Cambodia and often refers to his time there.

Here, he picks through the latest data and the pronouncement from Chris Witty.
The takeaway is that there will be no further lockdowns after the present one is eased. The vaccines will reduce deaths and the UK needs to accept a given number of annual deaths from Covid, just as it always easily accepted quite high numbers of deaths from the flu. Restrictions with economic and social impact will not return but others (e.g. mask wearing) with low impact will endure.
Interesting data points from India. Free vaccine rollout now open to 45+ years and any age can get it from a private hospital for $3.

Covid certificates on the cards for use in England since December

There's an awful lot of chatter on the radio about a Covid Passport scheme. This is not for Air Travel, this is just for going to the pub, club, football match or the theatre.

The usual anti civil liberties arguments are being trotted out, plus the ludicrous claim, repeated endlessly by broadcasters, that such a scheme would be "discriminating and divisive". Of course it is, it is intended to be precisely that.

What's your thoughts on this subject? I am going home soon so am going to have to get jabbed and sign up for it, which I have absolutely no problem with.

A government-commissioned report in December examined how Covid certificates could be used to decide whether people should be allowed into sports events, pubs and other crowded spaces, months before ministers publicly confirmed the plan.

A document prepared for NHS test and trace and seen by the Guardian shows that the research also looked into whether certificates could be made a condition of entry for family events such as weddings or even small casual gatherings.

The report, dated 17 December, was prepared by staff working for Zühlke Engineering, a Swiss-based consultancy that has worked closely on the UK’s Covid contact-tracing app, and has a number of staff embedded within the test-and-trace team.

Imagine the complaining in the UK if a sector of society was being denied the vaccine purely on the basis of their nationality and race!

John Campbell's take is that restrictions which do not cause economic harm will continue, perhaps for ever.

He is also saying that if the causes of Covid are not sufficiently understood (and therefore preventative steps are not taken), there could easily be another viral outbreak and the next one could be more serious.

They don't know how lucky they are.

Taking about race and vaccination, the black African and black Caribbean groups are refusing vaccination at the rate of about 42% and 32% respectively. These figures are currently among the over 70's who are the most clinically vulnerable. You'd think they would have more sense. These refusal rates will almost certainly grow as the ages of those called up get lower. Their fear of the virus is low and lower still is their trust in the state. Social media will do the rest.

Wait until those in the over 70's group become 90% of the hospitalised and dead and the rest start getting barred from everywhere. And not a single politician will come out and say. "it's your own fault."

That's ironic. Immigrants to the UK are being begged to get it but won't get it. Immigrants to this country are begging to get it but can't get it.

I expect a couple will say that and will then get condemned for being racist, thats why no MP or the teachers union said much about the current school teacher who has been suspended and is now in hiding in fear of his life

Is the UK Govt Allowing Tourists to Enter, While Forbidding Travel to UK Citizens ?

Labour says reports of up to 8,000 tourists arriving a day are 'staggering'
Party is demanding hotel quarantine system be tightened up to avoid new Covid variants coming to Britain
Aubrey Allegretti Political correspondent
Mon 5 Apr 2021 11.41 BST

Labour has said it is “completely outrageous” that up to 8,000 tourists may be arriving in Britain every day and demanded the government tighten up its hotel quarantine system to avoid new coronavirus variants being brought into the country.

Nick Thomas-Symonds, the shadow home secretary, said ministers were not doing enough to secure the borders after the Times
reported the statistic, as well as other figures including that as many as 90% of arrivals at Gatwick airport are tourists.

The government is under pressure to clarify whether the figures are correct.

Yvette Cooper, the Labour MP and chair of the Commons home affairs select committee, said the findings raised “serious concerns” and added that the Home Office “needs to urgently respond, explain and publish these figures”.

The immigration minister Kevin Foster said “we do not recognise these figures” and that “tough health measures” were in force even for those arriving in the UK “on a visitor visa for legitimate reasons”.

David Lammy, the shadow justice secretary, said it was “staggering” many tourists were still being allowed into the UK, despite most international travel outside the country being banned and the prospect of a ”traffic light” system to help it resume not coming into force for several months.

“I’m not one for ‘let’s close the borders’ but you can’t have a situation where later on today Boris Johnson is announcing a sort of red, amber, green system for those of us who are thinking about a summer holiday, and then we find out that the whole world and their aunt can come in, breeze into Britain,” he told LBC radio.

“Where is the hotel quarantine for these people? Nowhere. Where is [the home secretary] Priti Patel by the way? She’s so good at hiding from the media and not explaining this system.”
