National guard and curfew in Baltimore

Post by Anchor Moy »

It may be just an impression, but the level of violence does seem to be escalating in these US riots. Armoured vehicles? Is that like tanks with wheels ? What next ?

Or is this all just media hype, nothing to worry about and we should just go have a beer ?
Troops from the US national guard began rolling into Baltimore in armoured vehicles on Monday night after violent clashes, looting and fires led city authorities to declare a week-long curfew banning people from the streets at night.

At least 27 people were arrested after intense rioting broke out following the funeral service for Freddie Gray, a young black man who died last week of injuries sustained after his arrest. Fifteen police officers were injured in Monday night’s unrest, six of them seriously, according to chiefs.

Honestly its stupid. There was video footage, the cops are getting investigated and will be tried and found guilty. Zero question of that. Without riots.

I say let the guilty cops go free, not because they are innocent, but because if you clearly have no respect for actual justice it should have no respect for you. Hate cops? Fine... we won't use any to arrest/punish the ones who killed that kid. Happy?

An armoured vehicle is exactly what it sounds like, a vehicle (any type) that is protected by armour.

That's ridiculous. The rioters don't represent the large number of people in the US who are rightly upset that police routinely kill with impunity. I'm glad the national guard is in there cleaning things up, but the police should face justice. I'd like to think the murderous pigs will be convicted but history suggests otherwise. These violent opportunistic rioters shouldn't detract from the very real reform our police departments nationwide need.

Under the Posse Comitatus Act (18USC1385 at 20 stat 152) the US military cannot be involved in civil matters, but the national guard (and police) are an exception. The National Guard (military) are at the call of the governor of each state. This is how they get around the law to use military against US citizens on US soil. That and the federal government giving military training/equipment to any police force, now matter how small that wants it. Hard to turn down armored cars, guns/weapons, ammo, battle armor when its being given away.

My question is, how long before these disorganized mobs turn into organized insurrection? Wake up MM and get your head out of the sand down there on Martin Luther King Way, the American people have just about had enough of the police brutality and the corrupt judicial/political system. It not a matter of if there will be more uprisings like this, but when. Check out the militia movement in your state of Washington. Its on the increase.

In the Declaration of Independence (read it), our founding fathers stated that when a government get so corrupt as to endanger the rights and safety of its citizens, it is the "Duty" of the people to throw that government out. (read it, its there.) Why do you think the corrupt federal government is passing out hundreds of millions of dollars to every police department in America to form SWAT/para-military teams. Its no so they can get together and talk about there new black uniforms or the virtues of the M16 over the AK47, its to suppress the American public and get them used to living in a police state. 1984 has turned into 2015.

LOL! Why do you always assume I live on MLK?

I'm not against the political beliefs of the rioters at all, but I think any sort of civil disobedience needs to be targeted at the government. They're burning down and smashing innocent people's shops. That's bullshit. If they're mad at police, bomb the fucking police. Don't bomb some convenience store, destroying someone's life who did nothing to you.

I also share your belief that the US police are becoming more militarized and this is a problem. It is also a problem that local PDs across this country are demonstrably racist as shit. With a volatile racial situation like these riots, the national guard is better suited for the job. There is no pre-existing animosity and they're sure to have more black faces than the police units (yes, in this situation, that matters). You're trying to turn this shit into your into your odd endorsement of the right-wing militias that are indeed becoming more common across the United States when it has nothing to do with that. These rioters are asking for reasonable reforms (though obviously using unreasonable tactics) like ending that militarization, for one. Meanwhile, the right wing militia movements have decided that because a document written hundreds of years ago about an entirely different situation contains some rhetoric about kicking the bums out, they now have a "duty" to ignore our democratic process and impose their will through the threat of violence. They're totally different.

Great post MM.

I agree it's bullshit they are destroying people's livelihoods to prove a point. As you said, if you are angry at the police take it out on the police not the average small business who is working their ass off to survive.

Have you seen 'The Wire'? A lot of the problem is corrupt black politicians exploiting their own people for personal gain. It's not the white population, it's the elite population running the show for their own advantage, to hell with us. Any change anybody tries to make, OWS for example, dies a quick death, that has been true my entire life, I'm 65. This is a fascist country, run by capitalist goons who want no change whatsoever because things are working to plan for them and they control the show. But keep drinking that racist cool aid, that divides us so nicely so they can more easily maintain control.

I respect your opinion and I also respect your seniority, but US is and has always been a very a racist country dominated by white men determined to keep things that way. Putting ones blinders up will not make it go away. As you state, many black politicians are equally at fault for not addressing black plight but the system, that is the white system of neoliberal capitalism, is the real culprit. We have 400 years of history to show that this has worked extraordinarily well for white men at the expense of Native Americans, blacks, Latinos and poor whites.

I've spent quite bit of time researching the history of the Americas and it always the same -- whites decimate the aboriginal populations, then bring in slaves from Africa as cheap labor. Since the end of slavery new forms of wealth extractions from blacks (poor people in general) have emerged that have benefited white men in numerous ways -- education, housing, jobs, etc. The last 400 years has always, always, always been about creating more wealth for white men.

Society is very divided along race, there is no question. It has been that way for 100s of years. There is no point in denying it. Just because racism is not so explicit does not mean it does not exist.

In the real world pulling oneself by their bootstrap only works for a very few -- primarily white men. The class system we have continuously reinforces this position.

Unfortunately, racism permeates throughout society to the benefit of mostly white men. The has had a deleterious impact on poor whites and Latinos who've been swept up in the vacuum.

Nope. After the cop who killed a dude for selling cigarettes in NYC got away scot-free -- all confidence in the system has been lost. I gave, at least the benefit of the doubt, as to Ferguson; but too many incidents after this one. The system is clearly fucked up. People are rightfully pissed.
