Myanmar targets 5 million tourists with e-visa
If this is true ( yea right)
they will surpass Cambodia for tourists
ONLY drag is its ONLY for Yangoon Airport, NOT Mandalay not land borders ;-(
Requests for permits to travel to restricted areas have to be made in Yangon or, in some cases, locally.

The new service, found at http://evisa.moip.gov.mm/, is designed to be user-friendly and has been introduced as part of the country’s plans to encourage five million tourists a year by 2015.
The e-Visa is open to tourists from 41 countries, including the US, but only grants entry to the country at Yangon International Airport, making the method unsuitable for those crossing at land borders.
When applying for an e-Visa, travellers are being asked to agree to a number of conditions, one of which forbids the applicant from entering the “restricted area without seeking prior permission”.
Khin Yi, Burma’s Minister of Immigration and Population, said the launch of the service marked a special day for the country. It could ease the burden on the Burmese embassy in Bangkok, which is deluged with requests for visas and tourists there can often expect long queues.

Re: Myanmar targets 5 million tourists with e-visa
with the cost of accommodation there (from what i've heard) i imagine the visa isn't the thing keeping people away, lol.
Looking on Agoda for reference I filtered down to the lowest rated places and cheapest was 1 hostel for $13 and one regular room for $16... the rest were $30-70. The middle ground was between $50 and $200 a night. Makes for a pretty expensive 2 week vacation spot compare to Thailand/Cambodia/Vietnam/Malaysia.

Exactly. They've got to build hotels pronto. I was looking into another trip last Winter to see how stuff had changed and the hotel prices were stupid. I used to stay at Traders in Yangon for $70-80, 8 years ago. It was $350-400/nite when I looked. Too many Chinese and Korean businessmen feeding at the trough. Joints on the beach in Ngapali that would have been $30 in Thailand were going for $90.

supply an demand
building going on like crazy everywhere i went in July so expect hotel prices to drop in a year.
BTW low season prices are very reasonable in Mandalay and Bagan
MY hotel in Mandalay was $34 for air con wifi, cable flat screen tv
in Bagan i paid only $20 for an air con bungalow
IN Mogok paid $75 for a luxurious bungalow ( only 2 places to sty in town) that would be $150-200 in Thailand or Cambodia
All had breakfast included ( ur standard 2 eggs, toast, banana, coffee/tea)
Fan rooms would have been an average of $10 less.
High season prices double at least and the places are packed

Re: Myanmar targets 5 million tourists with e-visa
Been on 3 golf week visa run trips to Yangon in the last 10 years, amongst the old established courses there's a really nice Gary Player designed course with a stunning colonial property bordering the course, a beautiful setting. We stayed in the centre at a $30 place mid range business hotel. Unfortunately our last trip was going to be about 4 years ago and having made the booking when we phoned to re confirm we were told they hadn't received it, but we could have a room at $80. Very disappointing because it was obvious we'd been gazumped, and especially since we'd supported it when it wasn't busy and the place was getting very bad press. Supply and demand as you say, but I'd look outside Yangon if I ever went again.
Yes sir, I can boogie, I can boogie, boogie, boogie all night long.

Forgot to add, once was in Songkran and they had a very organised method of soaking each other which was amusing to watch, plus I really liked the beer stations. We used to kick off our nights in one beside the hotel and head off in the most run down taxis ever, it really was a great laugh.

i wonder if increased supply will lower prices, or if it will do what real estate here does. 10,000 empty houses for sale at 4x what they're really worth, and the next round priced even higher because they added a single minor feature.
they could end up with 1200 high priced guesthouses, because to offer a lower price would be to lose face.

I'm with OD. I've wanted to visit the country for years but never have because of the high prices (compared to the quality you get) and the way the country is too closed off. Comparatively high prices and little freedom of movement make it an unattractive destination for me. If either one of those things changed I'd be interested, but for now it seems a bit lame to be honest. What's the point of seeing an "untamed" destination if you can't go to the places you want to visit the most? I'd rather take a "tour package" to North Korea.

Re: Myanmar targets 5 million tourists with e-visa
I dont consider the prices i paid high at all. the room in Mandalay would have been the same price as Phnom Phen but the room would have been bigger onlynever have because of the high prices (compared to the quality you get)
the bungalow is priced same as what u get in Thailand/Cambodia
Just dont go in high season
also trains EVERYWHERE an dirt cheap
Mandalay - Bagan upper class 8 hours $2.90, Long distance bus's very cheap an better than Cambodia.
Flights everywhere an not overpriced
Motos / Taxi's everywhere and a bit more than a Cambodia.
Food costs on par with Cambodia but not as good and far below thai standards
Spoke with many hotel managers an they all agreed that prices were high but realized they would drop when the new hotels were finished.
Even in little Hsipaw ,which is very popular, there were 4 open GH's/ hotels an 3 more being built and
You can go wherever you want just many places require special permits ( you just pay the extra $$) an you cant get everywhere by road and some require flying in.
