Java wanderings.

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

Nice pictures. How do you get so many portraits? I can never bring myself to snap people. Do you just smile and ask them? Show them other pictures and say you're a photographer or something?

Most of the time I simply just ask with the majority of people agreeing. Sometimes I say I am trying to learn photography, which is true. Very often people say no to which I gracefully accept. If there is a particular subject that I believe has the potential for a nice portrait or composition, and they don't wish to participate, a few dollars usually swings them. Mother and Son is an example of a negotiated fee which i was more than pleased to offer as I could see the shot immediately and the subject had interesting features.

Just to ad, I am under no illusions whatsoever as to my ability, but I am enjoying the process. I also think photography is a great way to open door a little and peel back a layer of the community as most people want you to stop and chat or have a coffee. I never refuse a coffee and as a consequence find I pee a lot during the day.

I shoot portraits 75% of the time, u just need smile, point ur camera and......... You cant be shy about it, for me, its second nature now...
than after, show them the shot (love digital) an than u find everyone around wants there photos done.. :beer3:

I have never paid ( and suggest nobody pay as it sets it a standard for others to ask for $$), unless i know the photo will be used commercially and than need a signed release as well.

PS; I like some of ur shots, u have a good feeling and sense, BUT, (and please take this as advice and not attacking you) work on ur composition and be aware of ur F stop, for death of field more.

I'm using a 50 dollar smart phone, the cheapest phone with a camera I could buy as I've never tried taking photos before....no luxuries. Also, if I am going to gain from a person with a disfigurement or thaey have what I think might be something interesting, I will pay them if they want. Thanks for the advice.

Great stuff. $50 phone is working well. I like your composition. Kinda Japanese/ post impressionist.
Java makes me think of batiks ( megamemnon is a great design), gamalan (far superior IMO to that of Bali) and I guess coffee?
Are you getting through much cash there? Care to quote some prices?
Cheers.
