I think it's naive to label photography taken in developing countries or involving impoverished people simply as poverty porn without understanding the photographer's motivation, which I'd suggest is difficult unless you're familiar with the guy taking the shots. Do you feel these shots are taken to simply entertain the more fortunate? Or do you think there's a false narrative being depicted in the photos above? Why do you think it's poverty porn?
Could there not be journalistic or social documenting value in the scenes as well - a way in which to educate? Is National Geographic magazine poverty porn? Where or how do you make the distinction between what is and what isn't poverty porn, or is all of it poverty porn?
What about artistic beauty like composition, light etc - are we not allowed to pursue aesthetically pleasing images from environments that include poor people?
I agree some people do engage in poverty porn, but I think we have to be careful just to throw it out there every time a photographer takes a photo of a poor person.

agree, extreme oversimplification of his work and totally off base

"I have been a witness, and these picturesThrough photography, I can see the beauty of people and their human souls in the pictures I take. And though the circumstances of some of the people I portray may be grim and distressing, the people themselves are always remarkable characters and souls.
And it is my duty as a photographer and artist to point with my pictures at every aspect of existence in society and the world I live in, to show what can be shown, to go deep into every milieu and into every aspect of poverty, deprivation, and hardship that I encounter. I believe that the only sin for a photographer is to turn his or her head and look away.

its a weird subject i guess, sure it raises awareness, but i think the artistic nature takes away the real rawness, the way it looks like theyre posing for a photoshoot rather than people actually going about their actual day to day lives,Kung-fu Hillbilly wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 6:11 amI think it's naive to label photography taken in developing countries or involving impoverished people simply as poverty porn without understanding the photographer's motivation, which I'd suggest is difficult unless you're familiar with the guy taking the shots. beautiful pictures, they are, but their beauty takes away the actual harsh realities some of the 'models' actually live in, the beauty in the pictures make it look less real and more staged
almost feels like when people do a good deed just so they can brag about it on facebook for a pat on the back, going around taking pictures of less fortunate people, does anyone know if he pay his models for their time?

tbh both pictures youve added are a lot more raw natural looking than the ones in the original post, they show much more emotion of that momentphuketrichard wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 12:32 pm is this also poverty porn
