I would like to make it crystal clear. I don't oppose the death penalty in certain circumstances - murder an innocent or rape a child? I will happily pull the trigger myself. Drug trafficking? Interesting opinion piece on Indonesia's drug policies - Pushers and users are treated almost samesame.

However, if the Indonesian government were really serious about protecting the wellbeing of its citizens, it would pursue harm-reduction strategies aimed at Indonesian drug users instead of executing drug traffickers.

Currently, Indonesia has not only some of the world's harshest laws against the trafficking but also the consumption of drugs.

Indonesian laws make almost no distinction between drug dealers and drug users and anti-narcotics laws that criminalise and discriminate against addicts have become more draconian over time.

It is also pointed out that the same international community that is making such an outcry over these executions is also partly responsible for the situation.(It doesn't say so specifically, but I would presume that Australia tows the US "tough on drugs" line. And as someone else mentioned, it was the Australian police who were responsible for the arrests by Indonesian authorities, despite the possibility of the death penalty.)
