Background information on the death penalty in Indonesia - notably that public support for executions is high and the new Indonesian president feels he has to show how tough he is.
Interview with an Indonesian analyst (German article from DW in English) after the executions in Jan 2015. From what he says here, any chances of clemency were close to nil anyway.
...
In a DW interview, Indonesia analyst Yohanes Sulaiman says President Jokowi appears to have been under no apparent pressure to restart executions and that he is simply trying to convey the image of being a decisive leader in a country where there seems to be public support for the death penalty.
...
Will diplomatic appeals help prevent other executions?

It is a difficult question to answer because there are plenty of factors that might influence this. Obviously, overt international pressure, I think, will backfire spectacularly. The last thing Jokowi wants to have is the image of him kowtowing to foreign governments and pardoning drug smugglers on the death row.

The opposition and the media would have a field day condemning the government and that also runs counter to the image that Jokowi wants to cultivate, which is the image of him as a "decisive leader" who wants Indonesia to be respected abroad.

I think diplomatic appeals, done quietly and with some incentives behind it, could prevent the executions. The death penalty genie is already out of the bottle, so there's no way that Jokowi could declare that he would stop the executions.

Biggest Islamic country in the world, so why does anyone expect anything but violence from them (violence as in shooting someone who sells a product that doesn't contribute to building a mosque or doesn't add to the powers of the Imam's) Christians better wake up and start reproducing more or you will be under violent Sharia Law in the near future.

Australia has a fine military, if they were really serious about these guys they would just go get them. Plus they would use their military to stop the flood of illegal islamofascists from Indonesia. If Islam is so great why do people flee away from Islamic countries?

Yep revenging drugs smuggling with murder makes a lot of sense, going to be a late night waiting to see if there is some eleventh hour mercy.

Well done Indonesia for standing your ground :thumb:
Indonesia has executed eight out of nine drug convicts despite last-ditch appeals by Australia's foreign minister for a stay of execution so that claims of corruption during the trials of two Australian prisoners could be investigated.

The executions were carried out by firing squad at midnight 17:00 GMT) at Besi prison on Nusakambangan Island on Tuesday, after the inmates were given 72-hour notice.

Over the weekend, authorities had asked the nine inmates, two Australians, four Nigerian men, one man each from Brazil and Indonesia and a Filipino woman for their last wishes.

The execution of the Filipina, Mary Jane Veloso, however was delayed at the last minute after one of her recruiters surrendered to police in the Philippines, the attorney general's spokesman told the Reuters news agency late on Tuesday.

"The execution of Mary Jane Veloso has been postponed because there was a request from the Philippine president related to a perpetrator suspected of human trafficking who surrendered herself in the Philippines," Tony Spontana, spokesman for the attorney general said.
"Mary Jane has been asked to testify."

Wow, the Nigerians holding a staggering 44% of the group of 9 drug smugglers. Respect. :hattip:
