Huge crowds have turned out in Hong Kong on the 70th anniversary of communist rule in China in demonstrations that began peacefully but spiralled into the worst violence of the four-month old protest movement.
Police using live ammunition hit a protester for the first time, in Tsuen Wan district, a police source told the South China Morning Post.
“We want to show people it this is not a happy anniversary,” said Richard Hung, who works in technology. “The CCP (Chinese Communist party) has killed or injured so many millions of people already. We have come out today, because if we don’t, we may not have another chance.”
Police had warned ahead of National Day that they feared violent protests. Organisers had warned that citizens needed a legitimate outlet for their anger after their request for a legal protest was denied.
The day began with an early moment of police aggression, when officers used pepper spray on a small group of protesters outside the government’s official flag-raising ceremony, which was closed to the public.
For the first few hours the main march through central Hong Kong was largely peaceful with protesters dressed largely in black singing “glory to Hong Kong” and scattering paper money used for funeral offerings.
Many families and young children were among the crowds. “You see we don’t have any protective gear,” said Terrence, a logistics worker walking with his eight-year-old daughter. “We want freedom, and don’t want to belong to China.”

“An officer discharged his firearm after coming under attack and a protester was struck in the chest in Tsuen Wan district today,” a police source said after requesting anonymity.
The protester, who was welding what looked like a metal bar, was later rushed to Princess Margaret Hospital. His condition is still unknown.
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Comment from a HK citizen I saw on a livestream today:
"Police fired at least 3 live rounds at close range : 1 in Tsuen Wan shot in the chest in critical condition, 1 in Yao Ma Tei shot in the head and another one in Wanchai earlier."
Unable to verify veracity on the other two claims yet.

It’s HK’s last gasp before the takeover. The treaty ends in 10 years. After that the people of Hong Kong can be disposed of just like Tibetans or Uyghurs. And the people know it.
Plans to enact parts of martial law has been discussed at the council meeting.
Pity them.

I fear you are spot-on NewKid.
Look how quickly the Tiananmen democracy "uprising" was suppressed - and how totally that movement was extinguished from public consciousness.
Still, at least for now, all those rioting young protesters, and the millions of everyday Hong Kong people who march, are the perfect mirror to highlight CPC-China's dark side.
It's a good time to remind the rest of Asia of that aspect - just as China's hubris and aggressive nationalism is starting to really spill out over it's own borders..

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.
