Absolutely agree, this is all underrated essential art. I'd like to throw in:

-the William Gibson novels, particularly Neuromancer, and Idoru
-Ghost in the Shell (1995) - my absolute favourite film of all time, and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
-Tarkovsky's S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
-Oshii's Avalon
-Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun, and pretty much anything written by him, he's an underrated genius
-the Deus Ex games
-Altered Carbon (the book, not the NetFlix crap)
-I am Legend (the book, not the Will Smith crap)

Yeah.. That Neuromancer blew me away years ago

I like the 2017 Ghost in the Shell, but enjoyed the originals also..

I'll try the others you recommend - see if there is an audiobook for night time listening...

I couldn't stand the remake of Ghost in the Shell, it destroyed almost all of what was great about the original, but like I said its my favourite movie so I'm easily ruffled there.

The original Ghost in the Shell is an absolute masterpiece. I must have seen it 15+ times and every time it reveals new philosophical potential. It allows for endless speculation possibly more than any other film, at least that I've seen. What it means to be human, what it means to be alive, where the technology is taking us, and where it could take us, ... Oshii is a genius. And he has a new series in the works! Can't wait!

I was initially put off by the series, Stand Alone Complex, it looked like typical anime. But after finally giving it a chance, it is packed full of genuine Ghost in the Shell cyberpunk ideas, and a true tribute to its predecessor. I recommend it.

2019 film "I am Mother" interesting.

A lot of films seem to be based on HK style - mixture of Western and Chinese ideas.

Got enough between us to keep entertained up to Christmas anyway!!!

Thousands of demonstrators angered by the anti-mask law returned to Hong Kong’s streets on Sunday, after its introduction late on Friday sparked violence that ground the city to a halt.

Two groups of anti-government demonstrators, many of them covering their faces, marched in Causeway Bay and in Kowloon in a coordinated action that started at 2pm. The rallies later descended into chaos again, as mobs smashed MTR facilities and targeted shops.

Amid the clashes, police fired tear gas on both sides of Victoria Harbour, and the People's Liberation Army in Kowloon Tong issued a warning in an unprecedented move to protesters gathering outside.

It is the third straight day of protests against the anti-mask law. On Saturday the MTR Corporation, reeling from damage brought on by protesters accusing it of colluding with police and bowing to Beijing, closed its entire network.

11 injured amid protests
The rain-soaked scene in Mong Kok has calmed with most police leaving in vans. A handful of protesters are left, but many have dispersed. Argyle Street, one of the last roads to be blocked, is now clear.

The Hospital Authority says that as of 11pm, 11 people were sent to hospitals amid the protests. Of these, three were serious cases.

Supermarkets, shopping centres and MTR stations all remain closed for second day

Hong Kong shoppers emptied supermarket shelves and queued up at ATMs on Sunday as the city’s metro system remained half shut and major shopping centres stayed closed after chaos hit multiple districts in the city.

While early-bird shoppers complained about having to queue for almost 45 minutes at cashiers at supermarkets, latecomers were confronted with almost empty shelves. Throughout the morning, social media was awash with pictures of supermarkets and grocery stores that appeared to have almost no stock.

In Mong Kok, a housewife, Mrs Ma, rushed to a Wellcome supermarket around midday on Sunday, only to find many of the shelves already empty.

“Staff said that they opened for a half day on Saturday and did not have time to stock up new supplies because of the chaos all over Hong Kong,” she said.

“I am not sure if people have overreacted. But I have never seen this in my life. It is like wartime. I saw people even stock up on toilet paper.”

I suspect some of the protestors are plants from China. If they keep the protests going long enough to bring Hong Kong to its knees, it will be easy for China to take over.

This all all slightly surreal.
We really are in new territory.
The consequences of whatever response China chooses are hard to imagine,
and will certainly be far-reaching.

This is very different to Tiananmen Square, Tibet, the Uyghurs etc.
The Hong Kong population is wealthy, empowered, educated, free thinking - and overwhelmingly supports the rebellion.
Plus they are an island, always suitable strongholds for Independently minded societies.

I still predict mass arrests and a very harsh crackdown, but the ultimate outcomes of that are far less certain than at Tiananmen Square etc.
Fascinating to watch grand history play out in real time.
