Myanmar’s new military rulers on Monday signaled their intention to crack down on opponents of their takeover, issuing decrees that effectively banned peaceful public protests in the country’s two biggest cities.
The restrictions were ordered after police fired water cannons at hundreds of protesters in the capital, Naypyitaw, who were demanding the military hand power back to elected officials. It was just one of many demonstrations around the country.

Rallies and gatherings of more than five people, along with motorized processions, were banned, and an 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew was imposed for areas of Yangon and Mandalay, the country’s first- and second-biggest cities, where thousands of people have been demonstrating since Saturday.

follow up on the shootings
The shootings raise the specter of a more concerted crackdown by a military that is no stranger to the use of deadly force.
Myanmar’s coup can no longer be described as “bloodless.”

During protests in the capital Naypyidaw yesterday afternoon, several people were reportedly shot as police fired live ammunition at protesters massing near the city’s Thapyaygone roundabout

The govt has written to the Myanmar Press Council warning journalists and media organisations not to refer to Senior General Min Aung Hlaing’s junta as a “coup government”, claiming it is a violation of media ethics.

Don't call it a coup,' Myanmar junta warns
YANGON: Myanmar’s military leaders aren’t happy with the choice of words used to describe this month’s coup.

Amid a state of emergency that was “in accordance” with the constitution, some media are using “incorrect words” such as coup and referring to the military as a “junta” or “regime”, the Ministry of Information said in a statement to the Myanmar Press Council on Friday.

FACT SHEET: Biden-Harris Administration Actions in Response to the Coup in Burma
President Biden is taking significant steps in response to the military coup in Burma, and the unjust detention of President Win Myint, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and other civilian officials, as well as human rights defenders, journalists, and civil society leaders.

Together with allies, partners, and international organizations, we will stand with the people of Burma as they reaffirm their support for democracy through peaceful protest.
Imposing new sanctions on military individuals and entities: Today, President Biden launched a new sanctions regime targeting the Burmese military and its leaders, as well as their business interests. The U.S. Department of the Treasury designated 10 individuals and three entities for their association with the military apparatus responsible for the coup. Among these individuals are six members of the National Defense and Security Council, including Commander-in-Chief of the Burmese military forces Min Aung Hlaing and Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Burmese military forces Soe Win, as well as four members of the State Administration Council. Under the new Executive order signed by President Biden, Treasury can also target the spouses and adult children of these individuals.

Three entities, including Myanmar Ruby Enterprise and Myanmar Imperial Jade Co., LTD. which are wholly owned subsidiaries of a conglomerate owned or controlled by the Burmese military, have also been designated.

things are escalating

The girl shot last week died friday and 2 more have been killed

According to multiple reports on Saturday, at least two people were killed during an anti-coup protest in Myanmar, resulting in the most violent day since the military takeover of the government on February 1.

Police reportedly confronted protesters and ship workers who were striking in the country’s second-largest city during a standoff that lasted hours. Some of the demonstrators were reported to have flung items at the police, who then tried to disperse the group. According to Reuters, “Police responded with tear gas and gunfire, and witnesses said they found the cartridges of both live rounds and rubber bullets on the ground.”

There are reports of large, nationwide protests planned for Monday, Feb. 22. Some businesses announced they will be closed. Expect significant traffic delays and postpone unnecessary travel. If caught in a protest, be mindful of security force presence and possible confrontation.

and worse

- Police dispersed protesters in Myanmar’s two biggest cities on Friday, firing stun grenades, rubber bullets and guns into the air, witnesses said, as the challenge to the army’s bid to re-impose its rule showed no sign of slackening.

A lawyer for Suu Kyi, who is being held under house arrest, said he had not been granted access to her, three days before she is due to return to court, adding that it would undermine her right to a fair hearing.

There have been daily protests and strikes by democracy supporters for about three weeks, often drawing hundreds of thousands of people across the ethnically diverse country.

In Yangon, hundreds of mostly young people congregated again on Friday but they largely melted away when police prepared to move in.

Aung San Suu Kyi was taken away from her home in Naypyitaw six days ago to an undisclosed location, sources within the National League for Democracy (NLD) party have told Myanmar Now.

The military had been keeping her at the house on Myebon Thar street in Zabuthiri township since it detained her and other top government figures in early morning raids on February 1.

“We don’t know where she’s being kept anymore,” a senior NLD source said on condition of anonymity.

At least seven dead on bloodiest day of Myanmar protests against coup

Image
Myanmar police fired on protesters on Sunday in the bloodiest day of weeks of demonstrations against a military coup and at least seven people were killed and several wounded, political and medical sources and media said.
Myanmar has been in chaos since the army seized power and detained elected government leader Aung San Suu Kyi and much of her party leadership on Feb. 1, alleging fraud in a November election her party won in a landslide.

The coup, which brought a halt to tentative steps towards democracy after nearly 50 years of military rule, has drawn hundreds of thousands onto the streets and the condemnation of Western countries.

“Myanmar is like a battlefield,” the Buddhist-majority nation’s first Catholic cardinal, Charles Maung Bo, said on Twitter.
Police also opened fire in Dawei in the south, killing three and wounding several, politician Kyaw Min Htike told Reuters from the town.

The Myanmar Now media outlet reported two people had been killed in a protest in the second city of Mandalay.

Police and the spokesman for the ruling military council did not respond to phone calls seeking comment.

Police broke up protests in other towns, including Lashio in the northeast and Myeik in the deep south, residents and media said.
