Screaming people and bodies everywhere: The horrific aftermath of Myanmar junta airstrike that killed 133
https://edition.cnn.com/2023/04/12/asia ... index.html
Tired of seeing news/photos of Ukraine an NOTHING about Burma
Relatives were still recovering the charred bodies and limbs of victims killed in a military airstrike on a village in central Myanmar Wednesday, a day after one of the deadliest attacks since the junta seized power in a coup two years ago.
An eyewitness, who hid in a tunnel during the attack, described a scene of horror as he approached the site of the military airstrike – of children dying, women screaming, and bodies heaped on the ground.
At least 133 people, including women and children, were killed after Myanmar’s military junta bombed Kanbalu township in the central Sagaing region on Tuesday, the human rights minister of the ousted shadow National Unity Government Aung Myo Min told CNN.
First responders and medical teams haven’t been able to return to the site of the attack because military planes have continued flying over the town, though there have been no further strikes, said Aung Myo Min.

Re: Headlines Burma ( yes Aung san says you can say Burma)
The death toll from #Myanmar military's bombing of a civilian gathering is now up to 171, including 40 under 18. ASEAN "strongly condemns", US offers hopes and prayers; no one does anything. We must stop the import of jetfuel.
full storyThe use of planes and helicopters is increasing, with new jets and rotary wing aircraft imported from both Russia and China.
There were at least 600 air attacks by the military between February 2021 and January 2023, a tacit acknowledgment that the Tatmadaw, as the feared armed forces are known in Burmese, is unable to deploy forces in large parts of the country. Light Infantry Divisions, which do most of the fighting, are undermanned and spread thin.
.....
The international community could easily do something. You cannot fly jet planes without jet fuel, and Myanmar is 100 percent dependent on imports.
In a November 2022 report, Amnesty International concluded that foreign firms could not claim they were simply selling A1 aviation fuel to civilian jetliners, as the military controlled the entire supply chain. Once the fuel was in the tanks in Thaliwa port, no one could not ensure that it was not being diverted to military aircraft.

The Myanmar Air Force launched a series of airstrikes at the opening ceremony of the People's Administration Office in Pazigyi village, a large gathering in territory held by resistance forces, massacring at least 165[1] people in the junta's deadliest attack since seizing power in the 2021 coup d'état.[2][3]

Myanmar’s Military Is No Longer in Effective Control of the Country
The country’s neighbors continue to treat the military administration like a viable sovereign entity. They risk being left behind by events.
full article; https://thediplomat.com/2023/05/myanmar ... e-country/The military junta that attempted to seize control of Myanmar in February 2021 has failed. Free movement of its personnel is now reduced to the areas south and west of Mandalay in the country’s core. Even there, it is facing daily assassinations and bomb attacks and is barely able to govern due to widespread civil disobedience and a lack of public trust. The Naypyidaw junta, as it is aptly becoming known, is bunkering down wherever it can, reliant on its air force and roaming bands of methed-up soldiers to sow chaos in areas outside of its control.
Nonetheless, a group of Myanmar’s neighbors, India, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Laos, seem adamant about treating the junta like a single sovereign entity and nursing it back to strength. Through what’s being called a Track 1.5 dialogue, these countries are seeking to marginalize the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which has been placed by the United Nations and the wider international community in the driving seat of international Myanmar policy. ASEAN had been inching towards a more moderate and critical position on Myanmar, until Thailand launched a separate track of talks aimed at undermining this approach. Track 1.5 talks have included junta officials and aim to bring stability back to the country, in the hope the junta can force through a transition to a slightly more democratic-looking political arrangement, despite continued exclusion of its much more popular political opponents.
Even for states that couldn’t care less about the junta’s extreme human rights abuses or other moral concerns, this junta-first approach makes minimal sense, on realist grounds.

Hypothetical question. What happens when Myanmar becomes the next ASEAN president?
Does it sanction itself?
Or does it force ASEAN members to contribute to it’s ‘political stability’?

They dont even allow Myanmar to attend meetings
JAKARTA May 2, 2023– President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo will host the ASEAN summit on May 9-11 in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara. The humanitarian crisis unfolding in Myanmar will yet again test the credibility of the regional bloc.
Gen. Min Aung Hlaing will be barred from attending the summit, as ASEAN has yet to lift the punitive measure imposed on the Myanmar military junta for its disrespect for the five-point consensus (5PC). Still, despite the isolation, the junta is unlikely to relent or offer a compromise because it knows ASEAN wants it to relinquish the power it robbed from the Myanmar people on Feb. 1, 2021.

When I was in Yangon last September, the bank ATMs no longer worked (not that they had ever been that reliable!).
I'm returning in late July to Mandalay and my employer has to arrange to pay me directly into my Thai bank account because it is no longer safe to be paid in USD cash (as I used to be) because the petty crime/mugging rate has increased substantially due to:
- Many impoverished locals have been forced into petty crime
- The police no longer take action against petty crime
- Police stations are no longer accessible to report these crimes
- Locals fear to report them anyway in case others mistakenly assume that they are police informers when they enter a police station

Myanmar shadow govt welcomes ASEAN peace talks but distrusts junta
Myanmar’s shadow government welcomes efforts by ASEAN chair Indonesia to kickstart peace talks in the strife-torn Southeast Asian nation but is deeply distrustful of the junta that took power in a 2021 coup, a spokesperson said on Wednesday.
Leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) holding a summit in Indonesia have called for an immediate end to hostilities in military-ruled Myanmar, pushing for urgent dialogue and aid delivery.
“The biggest obstacle to peace talks is the military junta,” said Kyaw Zaw, a spokesperson for Myanmar’s shadow administration, known as the National Unity Government.
Kyaw Zaw said the junta was trying to mislead the international community, pointing to its failure to implement a five-point peace “consensus” agreed by its top general with ASEAN months after the coup sparked widespread unrest.
“The junta never keeps its promises,” Kyaw Zaw added. A junta spokesperson did not answer telephone calls to seek comment.

https://www.frontiermyanmar.net/en/into ... hwe-kokko/The assault on a criminal hub connected to the junta-aligned Kayin BGF was celebrated on social media, but on the ground it was a devastating defeat that has deepened divisions within the Karen resistance.

Under the watchful eye of Thai soldiers, hundreds of refugees carrying bundles of belongings on their heads assembled on the border on April 9 and waded through the shallow waters of the Moei River back to Myanmar.
“Make groups of 50 and register here to cross,” a Burmese interpreter for the Thai military bellowed through a megaphone.
As they made their way across the river, known as the Thaung Yin in Burmese, a few dozen refugees appealed to Thai authorities to let them stay until fighting in Myanmar stopped completely.
Around 10,000 people – Myanmar, Chinese, Thais and others – reportedly fled across the border near Mae Sot, Thailand after a Myanmar resistance group known as the Lion Battalion launched an assault on the military-aligned Kayin State Border Guard Force at their Shwe Kokko headquarters.
Chinese Foreign Minister’s Visit Reignites Anti-China Protests in Myanmar
https://www.irrawaddy.com/news/burma/ch ... anmar.htmlAnti-China protests have broken out across Myanmar following last week’s meetings between Beijing’s foreign minister Qin Gang and Myanmar’s military dictators.
China stepped up its engagement with Myanmar’s regime with the visit by the most senior Chinese representative to Naypyitaw since the 2021 coup. Qin met junta boss Min Aung Hlaing and former dictator Than Shwe.
Following the visit, activists, students’ union members and general strike committees across the country launched an online campaign, sharing the message, “Hey China: stop killing Myanmar’s people by supporting fascist criminals,” in Chinese and English.
Myanmar Regime Warplane Bombs School of 300 Students in Sagaing
https://www.irrawaddy.com/news/burma/my ... gaing.htmlA regime warplane bombed a Ye-U township school of 300 students in the resistance stronghold of Sagaing on Tuesday, the latest junta attack on schools after an assault that killed seven children last year.
The jet fighter conducted three rounds of attack, dropping six bombs on Bawdi School in Htan Taw village at around 2 pm on Tuesday, according to a local resistance member.
“Four bombs exploded next to the school compound and two more exploded nearby,” he said.
The bomb blasts damaged the school gate and library, according to a local resistance member from People’s Defense Comrade. Just an hour and a half earlier, the school gate was crowded with children. Carnage was only averted because classes were dismissed at 12.30 pm. As it was, no civilian casualties were reported.
Bawdi School is run by volunteer teachers who provide education for 300 students from nearby villages.

https://www.irrawaddy.com/news/the-worl ... -plan.htmlIndonesia—Southeast Asian nations have made “no significant progress” on implementing a peace plan aimed at ending bloodshed in Myanmar, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said Thursday, on the final day of a summit.
Escalating violence in junta-ruled Myanmar has dominated the three-day meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on the Indonesian island of Flores.
The regional bloc has spearheaded diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis, though a five-point plan agreed upon with the Myanmar junta two years ago has yet to be enacted.
Since the military ousted Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s government it has overseen a bloody crackdown on dissent, killing thousands of people and battling armed resistance to its rule.
While the defence strategic review shows Australia is focused on building capability through AUKUS, its declassified version fails to note a significant threat to regional security—Myanmar.
Myanmar’s junta is a threat to regional stability that could cause problems for Australia for years to come.
full story: https://www.aspistrategist.org.au/is-my ... for-asean/Australia has enjoyed relative stability across its northern outlook for decades, partly due to the peace and economic prosperity offered by ASEAN. While many commentators speculate about threats to ASEAN, such as China’s illegal behaviour in the South China Sea, ASEAN’s failure of unity in responding to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and even the impact of AUKUS, none of these are as serious as its response to the situation in Myanmar.
The international community has relied on ASEAN leadership to address the crisis in Myanmar, yet the bloc has failed to generate meaningful progress.
Non-interference in the affairs of fellow member states is a thread running through ASEAN’s six fundamental principles, but the list is silent on what it should do in cases of genocide or other serious human rights violations. Attempts to influence Myanmar via soft diplomacy have so far failed to end the junta’s rule or its war crimes. ASEAN’s five-point consensus has been utterly ignored by the junta.

So VERY TRUE!!!
full story: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/ ... SApp_OtherSince the coup in 2021 the carnage has been unceasing, meanwhile Russia and China continue to send weapons
The problem is not that governments around the world are unaware of what is happening in Myanmar. It’s that they are not doing nearly enough to stop it.
Since the military seized power in a coup in early 2021, it has terrorised the country, killed, tortured and imprisoned thousands of citizens, broken countless laws, and made a mockery of the UN.
The carnage is unceasing, yet only occasionally does it hit the international headlines. One such moment came in April when the junta bombed the village of Pazigyi, in Sagaing region. More than 160 people, including children, were killed by what Human Rights Watch said was a thermobaric, fuel-air vacuum bomb, followed by helicopter gunship attacks. “The ordnance detonated with deadly impact, ripping the bodies of men, women and children open, turning their skin to ash, and inflicting critical shrapnel wounds,” a UN report said.
Myanmar’s dictator, General Min Aung Hlaing, is as paranoid as he is brutal. He has banned opposition political parties, silenced the media, and jailed the country’s elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. An estimated 1.38 million people have been displaced. That’s in addition to hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees, victims of what investigators say may be genocide. “Systematic, gross human rights violations, amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity, [are] being perpetrated daily on the people of Myanmar,” the UN’s special rapporteur declared..
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
