Looking very rough now, military just taking random pot shots and murdering right, left and center. Well done Phuket Richard for bringing attention to this disaster.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

That would be Trump. He wouldn’t care about feeling good with building world consensus and take just action. Both good and bad points to this approach.Yobbo wrote:Where's the United Nations?
Except he isn’t president anymore.
Sorry for stirring the pot.
The previous poster who implied that the violence in Myanmar was all Trump’s fault irked me.

Off topic. This is the Burma thread. It's not always about you and Donald Trump.newkidontheblock wrote: ↑Sun Mar 28, 2021 10:04 pmThat would be Trump. Heartbreaking picture today of an 11 year old girl kid lying in a coffin with her few belongings, a little toothbrush, some cuddly toys, her crayoned pictures. It really should be on the front page of every major news outlet around the world to affect some sort of Draconian united world action. ( I guess the Chinese and Russians view this shit as acceptable given their attendance at yesterday's military posturing ceremony ). Sanctions aren't enough for this kind of blatant crimes against humanity.
What kind of utter scumbags go around murdering innocent kids or anyone for that matter for absolutely no reason other than their personal own enrichment and power trip.

This is terrible and it's a bloody nightmare, but I don't see any remedies proposed. There are sanctions, but they are obviously not having much effect. The alternative could be to arm and supply the opposition against the junta, but frankly, western countries arming opposition parties in SEA has never ended well ,and personally I don't think it's a good idea.
Do nothing - NO. Speak up - YES. Intervene - I don't know.

I don't really know what people ever expected of the UN, that's an insane hope when there are clearly interested actors at play which control the security council and which can deter unilateral action. I'm assuming the pressure will be weening off over the months like the old civil unrest and HK style. I've heard many have fled to Thailand.

The Myanmar people (ie all ethnic groups, Bamar, Karen etc etc) realise that it's a do or die situation now. Kill or be killed. They need weapons, training in sabotage techniques etc. Talking ain't going to do nowt!

Re: Headlines Burma ( yes Aung san says you can say Burma)
The Shan, (The Shan State Army-North), the Kachin, (The Kachin Independence Army & The Arakan Army ) & the Karen, ( The Karen National Liberation Army) are already armed and have been battle hardened for decades
BUT unfortunately dont have tanks & planes, nor the numbers to take on a civil war
How does this
match up against this
https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/2091367About 3,000 villagers from Myanmar's southeastern Karen state fled to Thailand on Sunday following air attacks by the army on an area held by an ethnic armed group, an activist group and local media said.
Myanmar’s military launched air strikes on five areas in Mutraw district, near the border, including a displacement camp, the Karen Women’s Organization said.
"At the moment, villagers are hiding in the jungle as more than 3,000 crossed to Thailand to take refuge," a statement from the group said.
Thai PBS reported about 3,000 had reached Mae Hong Son.
Eleven-year-old Aye Myat Thu was among at least 114 people killed by the military junta’s forces yesterday. She loved Barbie and Hello Kitty
Number of countries which accepted the findings of the UN Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar and agreed to implement their recommendations on justice and accountability:
ZERO
Not one.
This is why Min Aung Hlaing thinks he can get away with anything.

Mae Hong Son is a small place, 30,000 new arrivals concentrated there and presumably more to follow will create a considerable humanitarian logistical challenge. Hopefully the Thai government will get the finger out and assist even though it is "junta lite ".
