PANCHKULA, India (Reuters) - Violent protests erupted on Friday, killing at least 14 people, after a court convicted a self-styled “godman” of raping two women, angering thousands of his supporters who said he was innocent, police and officials said.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the head of a social welfare and spiritual group, was found guilty of raping two followers in a case dating back to 2002 at the headquarters of his Dera Sacha Sauda group in the northern town of Sirsa.

Supporters rampaged in response, attacking railway stations, petrol stations and television vans in towns across Punjab and Haryana, witnesses said.
At least 14 people were killed, most of them in Panchkula town where the court returned its verdict on Singh, a federal interior ministry official said. More than 200 were wounded in the two states, he said.

Television footage showed frantic scenes outside a hospital in Panchkula, with medical staff hurriedly transferring injured patients from ambulances on to wheelchairs and stretchers. Indian states in lockdown for guru's rape sentencing after deadly protests

India has deployed thousands of riot police and shut down internet services in two northern states before the sentencing of a self-styled “god man” whose followers were involved in deadly clashes with authorities after he was convicted of rape on Friday.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, leader of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect, has a vast rural following in Punjab and Haryana states, where his furious supporters burned down petrol stations and train stations and torched vehicles after a local court found him guilty of raping two women in a 2002 case.

Security forces have cordoned off a jail in Rohtak city, 44 miles (70km) from New Delhi, where Singh – also known as the guru of bling for the clothes he wears in the movies he has starred in – is being held.

The judge who convicted Singh will hold a special hearing inside the prison in Rohtak at about 2.30pm local time on Monday to decide the punishment, in a move that officials hope will prevent his followers from gathering in the streets like they did on Friday.

A self-styled Indian “godman” has been sentenced to 20 years in jail after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting two female followers.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh‘s followers went on a deadly rampage after he was convicted of rape last week, with at least 38 killed and more than 200 injured in protests in Haryana state.
As a result, a curfew has been imposed in several areas of the states, and the capital Delhi has been placed on alert.

The Dera Sacha Sauda, currently headed by Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan, who was convicted of rape on 25 August, is a den of horrors that keeps giving.

Apart from reports of women being raped by Singh and the act being described by the euphemism "pitaji ki maafi" in his secretive gufa or cave, at least two instances of murder and the forced castration of hundreds of devotees have come to light, all allegedly perpetrated under Singh's instructions.

Shortly before the release of Singh's controversial movie MSG: Messenger of God, a former member of the Dera accused the spiritual guru of forcing around 400 men in his ashrams to undergo surgical castration.

In a chilling report in The Quint, Hansraj Chauhan describes the ordeal he went through as a 19-year-old in the year 2000, when he was drugged by a compounder with a glass of Pepsi a Dera Sacha Sauda hospital in Gurusar Modiya in Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar. He woke up two days later to find his testicles wrapped in a bundle of bandages. Since then, he's not been able to indulge in sexual activities for the past 17 years...
