Greta Thunberg's climate change speech

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

Hunter, look' , i know i have been a bit harsh this morning, and maybe a bit of a smart arse.
(just trying to highlight this dynamic- as i see it - ie, of everybody being asked to prove it to those who don't accept the science, at this late stage)
Ok, very Ok, if you genuinely want to find out about it..
It is all there for the looking. and I'll buy you a beer if you do.

Can i put it like this. Reflecting the view of the kids.
They have lost patience with debating the science, and proving it to the determined sceptics.
again and again and again
There has been consensus on the science for a long time now.
The kids have moved on from that. and the whole debate has too. largely.

And yeah, they are starting to get pissed off at the lack of change and all the procrastination.
They were bought up in this science, they are confident about it, and they are looking at their future in the face.
They see this stuff as another excuse and they have lost patience. big time.
Maybe, for a moment, you can understand that
- especially if you really do want to get #101 on the science.
I wish you well if you do.

Explanations why previous climate changes happened in the absence of carbon emissions would be handy too.
watch Al gore's talk, "An Inconvenient Truth " an than his follow up, "An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power" 11 years on
You dont have to like the guy an he might be a bit of a hypocrite, but he does give a dam good explanation of why climate change is getting worse.
lots visual demonstrations for those whose english is not up to 1st world level
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

The Earth's climate has changed throughout history. Just in the last 650,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat, with the abrupt end of the last ice age about 11,700 years ago marking the beginning of the modern climate era — and of human civilization. Most of these climate changes are attributed to very small variations in Earth’s orbit that change the amount of solar energy our planet receives.

The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is extremely likely (greater than 95 percent probability) to be the result of human activity since the mid-20th century and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented over decades to millennia.1

Earth-orbiting satellites and other technological advances have enabled scientists to see the big picture, collecting many different types of information about our planet and its climate on a global scale. This body of data, collected over many years, reveals the signals of a changing climate.

The heat-trapping nature of carbon dioxide and other gases was demonstrated in the mid-19th century.2 Their ability to affect the transfer of infrared energy through the atmosphere is the scientific basis of many instruments flown by NASA. There is no question that increased levels of greenhouse gases must cause the Earth to warm in response.

Ice cores drawn from Greenland, Antarctica, and tropical mountain glaciers show that the Earth’s climate responds to changes in greenhouse gas levels. Ancient evidence can also be found in tree rings, ocean sediments, coral reefs, and layers of sedimentary rocks. This ancient, or paleoclimate, evidence reveals that current warming is occurring roughly ten times faster than the average rate of ice-age-recovery warming.3

Do you guys understand that to meaningfully fight carbon emission the size of the world economy would have to be cut in half or more? Standards of living in the western world would have to drop to those in asian countries. Those western kids fighting for it would have to live on rice, wear the same clothes for years, no modern gadgets, walking instead of driving, et cetera, et cetera. My level of english is not native but i am sure you get the picture. It is simply not going to happen. Not as much as and as fast as necessary if indeed the climate is changing due to modern economy emitting too much gas into atmosphere. So in my view it’s all empty talk, co2 emissions will continue unabated to keep economy on pace with populations’ expectations.

And if nothing is done living standards will be cut in half not by choice but by nature. That and the western world does not own the entire world and climate change will affect the entire world, rich nations may be better prepared for floods, drought, famine, rising sea levels, etc but any finite resource ( as the world is ) spent with no regard for the future will definitely deplete to the point of collapse. You asked for solid information on climate change and it was provided to you from a reputable source, Ie NASAthe people that put a man on the moon, far smarter and more reliable than the collective forum members. Your response is wow , that is too much effort. My analogy is a man having a heart attack who states he would go to a hospital for treatment but first wants to go to the golf course for a round with his friends.

Yeah, thanks for the info. I cut straight to the point. Yes, it’s too much effort for these kids. I’ve been through worse times in my younger age, i can do it again. But western kids are spoiled too much, i don’t think they can take it. If the worst happens, it happens by nature. Knowing is one thing but applying knowledge is not something they will want to do. Not going to happen. With this conclusion i will not waste more energy on this topic.

I believe that earlier you were basically denying that climate change was due to our collective emitting of co2 among other things.

Now you are making some sense that people will not change the way they pursue greater wealth thus exasperating the problem further. Millions of people are entering middle class and demanding all that goes with it. And those that aren't there yet are striving to get there while still burning coal charcoal to heat and cook.

You are unfortunately probably correct.

No, i was not denying. I was asking for proof to form an opinion. I didn’t have an opinion on it and still don’t. But whether it is true or not, as i said, nobody is going to do anything meaningful about it. That’s all the practical information we really need to know. Out of here.

Who knows? - you might be right.
After all, nobody has ever thought of it before.
