London, United Kingdom: Former singer Gary Glitter has been jailed for a total of 16 years for sexually abusing three young girls between 1975 and 1980.
Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was sentenced for attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and one of having sex with a girl under 13.
Sentencing, Judge Alistair McCreath said he could find "no real evidence" that Gadd had atoned for his crimes.
The 70-year-old show no emotion as he left the dock at Southwark Crown Court.

That's too bad, because 16 years at 70 still gives him a chance to get out. Hopefully he dies in prison, but we'll see.Judge McCreath said he assessed the seriousness of the offences by current guidelines, but he was limited to the maximum sentences that were available at the time the offences were committed, when "the sentencing climate was less severe".
"The offences for which I must pass sentence today took place many years ago at a time when in particular, in respect of one of them, the maximum sentence was considerably lower than that which is now available," he said.
Judge McCreath said the modern equivalent offence of unlawful intercourse with a child under 13 would be equivalent to rape of a child, but said he was not permitted to pass a life sentence.
He said the offence of attempted rape was "so serious" as to justify the maximum available sentence under the old regime of seven years, which he noted would be a lenient sentence under modern guidelines.

For acts he committed between 1975 and 1980. Sounds like the UK has no statute of limitations for such cases. Most states in the US do.

I need to find an old video that resurfaced recently showing Gary Glitter telling some lady to "shhhh" on a talk show when she started telling the live audience about how she and her friend would charge young school girls a couple dollars (pounds?) to come visit Gary Glitter in their house...

I guess this comes as no surprise at this point:
I remember the first year I came to Cambodia I got invited to a big expat Halloween party and someone came dressed as Gary Glitter, LoL. That's when I knew I was right about Phnom Penh being a crazy fucked up place.

So a 70 years old gets a 16 years sentence for something he did over 30 years ago and that is deemed a crime according to a law decreed after the facts were committed.CEOCambodiaNews wrote:

Seriously I can't imagine a more fucked up violation of all justice principles.
First, a law should not be retroactive. Otherwise, why don't we condemn God for fucking Mary when she was only 12 years old ?
Second, it's quite ridiculous this "no prescription" rule for sexual abuse, I mean if he had killed them he would be ok because murder gets prescribed after 30 years, but as he just fucked them he gets jailed for life ? This is crazy beyond belief

No, read the article first. He didn't get as much time as we'd expect him to because he had to be judged according to the law at the time the crimes were committed. If he were judged by today's laws, he would have gotten a lot more than 16 years.

Who is this guy, in America never heard of him. He's 70 years old? Man I'm 70 and he makes me look like a youngster. In America the actual legal doctrine on retroactive prosecution is called "Ex Post Facto." You can't prosecute someone for an act that wasn't illegal when they committed it, but is illegal now. But, the corrupt American judicial system has ways around any civil right/law.
Retrospective criminal laws are prohibited in the UK under Article 7 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Re: Gary Glitter Jailed for 16 Years for Abusing 3 Young Gir
Again, the article specifically states that he was NOT prosecuted based on the laws of today, but based on the laws that were in existence at the time his crimes were committed. This is why he only got 16 years and not life. Nothing illegal or unethical happened here; a habitual sexual predator got a relatively light sentence and the BBC quoted the judge explaining that she (like many) would have preferred that he be sentenced to more time, but that this was the maximum allowed. That's it.
