Gang rapes of female foreign tourists in India

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

Gang rapes of female foreign tourists in India

BBC.com wrote:India arrests five for kidnap and rape of Japanese woman

Five men have been arrested in India charged with kidnapping and repeatedly raping a Japanese student.

Police in the eastern city of Calcutta say the assaults took place over a period of more than a month from 23 November and in at least two locations.

They say an organised gang is suspected of targeting single women tourists.

Increasing numbers of rape cases are being reported and highlighted in India, prompting widespread outrage.

Pallav Kanti Ghosh, a Calcutta police commissioner, told BBC Hindi that two of the men - said to be brothers - approached the 23-year-old victim as tourist guides after she arrived in the city and checked into a hotel in an area popular with foreign tourists.

Trafficked at Buddhist holy site
"One of the men spoke very fluent Japanese," he said.

"They said: 'We are guides and want to take you sight-seeing.'

"They took her to Digha [a beach resort in West Bengal state] on 23 November. There they sexually assaulted her and robbed her of 76,000 rupees [£1,200] using her ATM card."

She was then taken to Bodh Gaya, the holiest site of Buddhism and a major pilgrimage and tourist centre.

"There, the men handed her over to other gang members," Mr Ghosh said.

The woman was held captive for several weeks and the assaults continued, he said.

In late December she managed to reach the city of Varanasi from where she travelled to Calcutta, lodging a complaint via the Japanese consulate on 26 December.

Mr Ghosh said three of the men were arrested near Bodh Gaya and two in Calcutta. The Hindustan Times newspaper said some were held after their mobile phone calls were intercepted.

He said police were searching for other members of what he called an organised gang, several of whom are reportedly proficient in Japanese.

Sexual violence in India has been in the spotlight since a student was fatally gang-raped on a bus in Delhi two years ago.

That and other cases have prompted a domestic and international outcry.

Other foreign women targeted by gang-rapists include a Swiss cyclist assaulted in central India in 2013 and a Danish tourist attacked in Delhi a year ago.

Rape laws have been toughened in response to the crimes but correspondents say this has failed to act as a deterrent.

I narrowly avoided being abducted in Kolkata (although I doubt for the same purpose) - I saw the setup being put together behind me in a security mirror in the hotel lobby as I was checking out and managed to dive into a moving taxi. I hate that city. The most radically Muslim place I have been, couldn't even stop walking to assist old women dying in the street for fear of being attacked/killed.

I wonder what prompts gang raping, both psychologically and culturally. It definitely seems to be prevalent in countries like India and Pakistan.

Jesus H. I have never heard any stories like that about India (regarding kidnapping of men)...although I do recall some instances where white men interacting with local women were attacked by a mob. You sure it wasn't a misunderstanding on your part? I can't imagine they were speaking English.

100% sure. Not what I'd have expected either, I'm a big scary westerner.

Perhaps they thought you were trying to convert people to Christianity? All measure of evil sins get ignored in such places, but merely the thought of anyone's religious conversion will get instant, hysterical mob action.

That could have been it. You might be surprised to hear I was there to visit the red light district.

So is there a general "no whiteys allowed" vibe in the red light district of Kolkata? Either way, jealous local men going after seemingly affluent (to them), foreign men seen cavorting with "their women" is not unheard of. Attacks on farangs in Thailand by local men in such nightlife districts are not uncommon. I wouldn't want to be walking around the SHV chicken ranch alone at night. I can't say I've heard of any white guys going to India specifically for sex tourism. Maybe that is why...not a good vibe.

Or if you were overheard trying to persuade the prostitutes to leave the brothel life, and endangering the local men's (pimps) income, that would definitely put you on their radar for a beatdown.

All reasonable comments, but the attempted attack (which I'm guessing was all about robbery) was in the main part of the city, away from the red light district. I was a missions director for a church and visiting a Kiwi missionary guy who's based in the Sonagachi RLD permanently with his family running a social enterprise. He only moves in the district with one of the old grannies (the local business owner) as his chaperone, and watching this guy work was really humbling - made me think of Mother Teresa. And yeah, he's under constant threat from the local pimps for getting the girls to give up the game. It would not surprise me to hear he's been killed or made to disappear. There's a corrupt property developer in the area that's trying to get him arrested on trumped up charges as the enterprise property backs onto a new development of short-time flats, and the pimp reckons the johns will be put off by the work of the enterprise. He's a braver man than me, personally I have no intention of going back unless there's literal writing on the wall.

While I do admire selfless people who devote their lives to helping others in need, I can't quite agree with you about Mother Theresa. There are many ways of going about a worthy cause, and God bless her for the people she helped, but as I understand the situation, she forced religious conversion (from Hinduism or Islam or whatever the case) before any food, care or assistance was given. A similar tactic was used by British loyalist protestant charities in Ireland during their great famine. "Denounce Catholicism or no soup for you".

Correct me if I'm wrong on M.T.
