dad should have kept them in a locked cabinet/safe or at the least used a trigger lock. if not he might be libel for a civil suit.
lots of questions to be answered for sure

You need handguns for hunting? Is a rifle/shotgun not good enough?

One thing is for sure, gun control wont solve all these killings , (guns were legal)
Isn't the point that the guns should be either:

a) illegal in the first place (all handguns are illegal in UK)
b) controls should be much more stringent in the first place. (again the UK has criminal record check, interview process, house visit etc)

Granted it is the culture that also needs to change, in the UK many people 'could' own a gun if they wished but most do not see the need. But making unnecessary firearms illegal in the first place is not a bad step
Who is to say what is necessary and what isn't? 2 amendment allows one to own >

If i live in the inner city and i want a hand gun to protect my family, is that necessary and what if want go hunting during deer season,
what about i live in bum fuck nowhere and just want go target practicing?

I owned a rifle and hand gun and was on my hs shooting team, was that necessary?

I dont think assault rifles should be legal BUT i am not going to refuse someone to owon one.

to own a fire arm;

criminal record check
over 21
no mental disease
5 day waiting period
required to take a fire arm safety class

STILL this wont stop; kids taking their dads guns or people stealing guns or gangs/criminals possessing them

The second amendment is the whole problem, I understand that me mentioning this is a waste of time but I have anyway, it took until the 13th amendment to ban slavery, proof that laws can change with time and original laws can end up looking a little crazy
If i live in the inner city and i want a hand gun to protect my family, is that necessary
Not necessary, if nobody had guns then you don't need
I want go hunting during deer season

as mentioned previously, rifles are not banned in UK, mainly for hunting
what about i live in bum fuck nowhere and just want go target practicing?
get a normal rifle?
I owned a rifle and hand gun and was on my hs shooting team, was that necessary?
is it a choice, yes. Is it necessary, no. Needless to say, most schools in the UK do not have a shooting team.

Is there a reason why you have to own your own guns to be on a shooting team?

I dont think assault rifles should be legal BUT i am not going to refuse someone to owon one.
Why not, I can not think of a single reason why someone would legitimately need an assault rifle

the UK has had one mass shooting since the laws changed in 1996. it is still legal to buy certain guns for hunting and shooting clubs, certain shotguns/rifles are still legal, which are the only guns really needed if hunting.

Someone queried ," isn't s rifle or a shotgun enough for hunting. I used to live in Maine, not far from Quebec. I was primarily a deer hunter and yes a 30.06/was fine. However I was also a trout fisherman too. The peak of that season coincided with mama bears with cubs on the prowl. My .41 magnum in a shoulder holster, not concealed, afforded me insurance against being the bears' dinner. Ever try fly fishing under those circumstances?
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

Guns? Who needs guns? You can hijack an aircraft with a box-cutter and several aircrafts with several box-cutters, or so I've been told.

I would choose something bigger than a 30.06 for a bear, 375 or 450.
