traveller is some one who never stops moving.

tourist work most the year and have two week holidays AKA 2 week millionaires, AKA temple tourists.
Really? That is interesting. By whose definition? And why do the soap-dodgers call themselves "traveler"?
They don't like to be seen as penniless tourists, and traveler sounds a lot better than Itinerant, Vagrant or Hobo.

I think i read somwhere that the difference between a traveller and a tourist is the intent to which they travel. A tourist leaves home looking forward to the time they will go back. A traveler leaves home hoping he will never go back. Or something like that.

There are of course all sorts of travelers, from explorers to those who drive across continents and trek through vast wildernesses. That's not what we're talking about here.
These days most self-described "travelers" are just tourists who have deluded themselves into thinking they are something special. They talk garbage about "immersing themselves in the culture" and "going off the beaten track" when in reality they are just going from one well-worn destination to another while spending most of their time with other idiots of the same ilk. They talk shite about how long they have "been on the road" when the truth is they were living in their parent's house up till very recently, and that's likely where they are going back to soon. They try to out-do each other with tales about the crazy border in Poipet and the wild scenes up in the "Golden Triangle" (Vang Vieng) while arguing with locals about the price of a pineapple.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

there are 2 kinds of Tourists
a Tourist is someone visiting another country for pleasure
Tourist > Traveller - come to explore the country and culture, Backpackers fall into this catagory
Tourist > Holidaymaker - Come to visit a Country for a holiday, usually staying in a fixed place

both are still Tourists to the country

I think JB sums it up best. O was yanking Pineapple's chain, just cannot help it. The self-proclaimed "Travelers" firmly embedded on the banana pancake trail see a lot less than the clientele of my company who can actually afford a decent guide, decent hotels, and decent food and therefore have the means and time to discover where they are. All the "travelers" tend to see is variations of Kao San Road or Pham Ngu Lao, busy trying to scrape together the money for half a pineapple and then telling people how much they know about everything and how they totally understand the locals even though they have only ever met a handful of the natives.

The tourist is sitting on the barstool.

The traveller is getting off it and moving. :)

Here is one of my favorite quotes, "“ TO BE A TOURIST is to escape accountability. Errors and failings don't cling to you the way they do back home. You're able to drift across continents and languages, suspending the operation of sound thought. Tourism is the march of stupidity. You're expected to be stupid. The entire mechanism of the host country is geared to travelers acting stupidly. You walked around dazed, squinting into fold-out maps. You don't know how to talk to people, how to get anywhere, what the money means, what time it is, what to eat or how to eat it. Being stupid is the pattern, the level and the norm. You can exist on this level for weeks and months without reprimand or dire consequence. Together with thousands, you are granted immunities and broad freedoms. You are an army of fools, wearing bright polyesters, riding camels, taking pictures of each other, haggard, dysentric, thirsty. There is nothing to think about but the next shapeless event."
