Chinese Interpol President Disappears during China Visit
Interpol urges China to clarify status of missing president Meng Hongwei
6 October 2018
International police agency Interpol has urged China to clarify the status of its president, Meng Hongwei, who has gone missing on a visit to the country.
The agency said it was concerned about the well-being of its president.
His family have not heard from him since he left Interpol HQ in the French city of Lyon on 25 September. China has made no official comment.
The South China Morning Post quotes a source as saying Mr Meng, 64, was "taken away" for questioning in China.
It is not clear why he was being investigated by "discipline authorities" or where he was being held, the Hong Kong-based newspaper adds.
What is the full Interpol statement?
Carried on the Interpol website and quoting secretary-general Juergen Stock, it says: "Interpol has requested through official law enforcement channels clarification from China's authorities on the status of President Meng Hongwei.
"Interpol's General Secretariat looks forward to an official response from China's authorities to address concerns over the president's well-being."
Mr Stock oversees the day-to-day work of the 192-member organisation, with the role of the president largely ceremonial.
Interpol co-ordinates searches among its members, issuing yellow notices for missing persons and a red notice - an international alert - for a wanted person. However, it does not have the power to send officers into countries to arrest individuals or issue arrest warrants.
Interpol had earlier said Mr Meng's case was "for the relevant authorities in both France and China". France has opened an investigation.

Jason Bourne-style intrigue! Sounds like a good opening to a movie.

Re: Chinese Interpol President Disappears during China Visit
Some bits of information for those not reading the links and some that aren't in the links either.
Meng was the Xi's "Blue eyed boy" while he was toeing the party line and helping Xi legitimise his HR abuses against the Uighur .
Meng went against the party line.
Meng is now getting his wrists slapped.
- He was elected president of Interpol in 2016 after a long career in Chinese Communist Party law enforcement; his term lasts until 2020.
- He is still named as a vice-minister of public security on Chinese government websites but is no longer a member of the Communist Party Committee. he lost his seat in April, after a significant controversy between Interpol and Xi Jinping’s regime.
- In February, Interpol announced it would cancel a “red alert,” a call for international police to make an arrest, for Dolkun Isa, the head of the World Uyghur Congress. China had applied for and successfully attained a red alert for Isa, claiming the activist was a “terrorist” and his group, which advocates for the human rights of China’s Uighur minority, is a global threat. Interpol, under Meng, determined that China had not sufficiently proven Isa was a threat.
- China expresses its dissatisfaction at Interpol revoking the red notice for Dolkun Isa, China’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement at the time. “Dolkun Isa is a terrorist as determined by the Chinese government."
- Prior to the cancelation of Interpol’s red alert for Isa, Xi had aggressively supported cooperation with Interpol. Interpol held its 2017 conference in Beijing, where Xi said his country “highly commends Interpol’s efforts to protect the world’s security and stability, and will continue to support Interpol to play an even more important role in global security governance.”

Interpol says no option but to accept China's removal of its chief
Meng Hongwei, incumbent president of Interpol, was forced to resign after being arrested on trip home to China for allegedly accepting bribes
Agence France-Presse
Thu 8 Nov 2018 23.37 GMT
Interpol must accept the resignation of its Chinese boss, who is detained in China on charges of accepting bribes, the organisation’s secretary general has said.
Interpol, which coordinates police work across the world, has been “strongly encouraging China to provide us with more details, more information” on what exactly took place when then-director Meng Hongwei was reported missing in early October, Juergen Stock told a news conference at Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France.
The body investigating Meng, China’s National Supervisory Commission, can hold suspects for as long as six months without providing access to legal counsel.
“We have to accept, like we would accept with any other country, that this country [China] is taking sovereign decisions and if that country tells us ‘We have investigations, they are ongoing, and the president has been resigning, he’s not a delegate of the country anymore,’ then we have to accept,” Stock said.

Former Chinese Interpol president Meng Hongwei facing prosecution on bribery charge
Meng disappeared after returning to China from France last year and later sent his wife a message suggesting he was in some kind of danger
Announcement of formal arrest suggests that prosecution is imminent

The disappeared former president of Interpol Meng Hongwei has been formally arrested in China on suspicion of accepting bribes, prosecutors announced on Wednesday.
Meng was last seen on September 25 after leaving his home in the French city of Lyon for China. He sent his wife, Grace Meng, a message on social media telling her to “wait for my call”, along with a knife emoji suggesting he was in some kind of danger.
She reported her husband missing to the French authorities on October 4 and was later put under police protection after receiving threatening messages over the telephone and online. Earlier this year she applied for asylum in France.
Meng was expelled from the Communist Party of China and stripped of all his positions for “serious violation of the law and discipline” on March 27.
He was accused of abusing his position and power for personal gain, squandering state funds to finance his family’s extravagant lifestyle, and disregarding the principles of being a party member.
In a rare gesture, the party commission also accused Meng of encouraging his wife to use his status to further her own interests.
The announcement that a suspect has been formally arrested usually means that the watchdog’s investigation has been completed and the case will be passed to prosecutors for review and that a prosecution is imminent.
