Catalonia Leaders sentenced to between 9 and 13 years

Post by Doc67 »

The Catalans are back on the street to protest about the extremely harsh sentences for sedition because the elected government of Catalonia organised a referendum on independence from Spain, without permission. The Spanish government sent in the robo-cops and the whole thing descended quickly into grotesque violence against people going to vote.

I have a Spanish friend from Barcelona and she tells me that the whole independence movement has driven a wedge between so many families, including her own. She comes from a very large family of her and 7 siblings. With all the wives, husbands and children, and a few other relatives, their Easter gathering would normally be about 35. Last Easter it was 25. He mother is distraught at what is has done. This is common in Catalonia.

If you think Brexit is divisive, it ain't got nothing on the Catalonia separatist movement. These draconian sentences are unlikely to heal any wounds...

Here's the story...

Carles Puigdemont has written a piece which is worth a read.

My first visit to Spain was under Franco.
That colors everything up to the present day.

Harsh sentences - when at least half of the population that these gaoled leaders represent fiercely want separation.
But that is the reason for the long terms I guess.

The church and centuries of monarchs and dictators have ensured that nationalism is still a very strong strand in Spanish society, and most Spaniards identity, despite their regional attachments. And the elites have always enforced that nationalism ruthlessly.

It is hard to understand what the separatists were thinking when they staged their last little revolt.
Surely the would have known that far more detailed preparations would have been needed.
Including for military kick-back.
They played right into Madrid's hands by shooting too early. There is unlikely to be another strong independence push in Catalonia for many years now.
