Briton arrested in Philippines with cache of guns and knives

The pair were caught by the agency’s anti-transnational-crime unit, which worked with a search warrant, the CIDG statement said. It added officers had found five .45 calibre pistols with 25 bullets, 14 bladed weapons, five brass knuckles, one slingshot, one stun gun, as well as a pistol cleaning kit and holsters.
A pistol cleaning kit! He's obviously guilty as hell! :D

British businessman arrested in Philippines with huge stash of weapons
December 16, 2017
MANILA - A British businessman who lived a ‘’lavish lifestyle’’ in the Philippines holds his head in his hands after being allegedly caught with a huge haul of weapons. Matthew George Marney, 38, had been living with his Filipino girlfriend while running a property business when local police were tipped off that he was hoarding a huge stash of guns.

Officers raided the entrepreneur’s home last month on November 23 where they arrested Marney and Filipino Rommel Castillo, 45, who worked as his driver.
They said Marney had ”two SUVs and a modified Subaru race car’’ worth 90,000GBP while living in an upmarket part of the city.

Police unpacked bags at the local station in Manila where Marney was pictured in an orange shirt looking devastated as the haul of five .45 caliber pistols, 11 magazines, 25 bullets, 14 bladed weapons, five brass knuckles, a stun gun, a slingshot other accessories were laid out on a table before him.

Superintendent Roque Merdegia, head of the country’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Anti-Transnational Crime Unit which carried out the raid, said they received a tip from an informant about the presence of armed men in the expensive Pasig City district of the capital.

According to an online profile, Marney ”has been providing real estate and relocation services to British nationals and expats since 2010’’.

Hmm, I thought if you needed to carry $10k or more in cash from your business for whatever reason, you could obtain a permit to carry in the PI. No?

Even then, don't come knocking...Not for ANY reason.

So, who is Matthew Marney, where did he get all that lolly, and why so many weapons ? (And why that hair-style ?)
Let's start with this comment here from a Philippine forum.

And sure enough, with a quick check, it turns out that Matthew Marney is an international 'property investor' from the UK. He started working in the UK before graduating to the Middle East, and then the Philippines.

A person with the same name is mentioned on a boilerroomscam blog in connection with property scams in Spain.

UAE: Matthew with a better hair-style.

And in November 2017, at almost exactly the same time that Marney was arrested, these were put online:

His arrest may have saved some potential victims from misery.

That's the lolly and the lifestyle accounted for, but the hair-style and the weapons remain a mystery. Was Marney playing out of his league ? The reason given for his arrest was that someone called the cops after seeing armed men on Marney's property, and he did not have permits for his firearms.
Superintendent Roque Merdegia, who led the raid, told the Guardian that the unit had received a tip-off from somebody who had reported seeing armed men at Marney’s home. An investigation showed that Marney did not have a licence to carry firearms in the Philippines.
“We were surprised to discover five short firearms. That’s not normal,” Supt. Merdegia said.
He added that it was a “priority” case and the police would liaise with British embassy to check if Marney had a criminal record.

To be continued... if anything else turns up. Or we find his hairdresser.

I wonder if the guns actually work? last time I was in Philippines the hotel guard has 357, 38 and 9mm casings in his belt. The gun was a 100 year old 38 revolver and one chamber was cracked so you could see daylight.
