Re: Bali Mount Agung Volcano Set to Blow Within 24 Hours
as frank said, has erupted 3 times so far
so far this is proving to be hurting the tourism more than the Bali bombings and i would hate to be one of the 50,000+ locals that have left their homes for months now
well written piece, scroll down to postsImpact of Agung, worse than bombings, say tourism and local chiefs
Just how bad is it in Bali? Of course, if you believe the social media campaign promoted by the Indonesian government and Bali tourism, Bali is safe.
But then if you read reports in the media from hoteliers, restauranteurs, and travel operators, there has been a huge drop-off in tourist numbers.
So why are there less visitors around?
I believe it is practical, pragmatic reasons for the sudden downturn in tourist crowds, as well as prospective visitors making decisions with their heads and hearts.
How many?
Let’s put this in context. Bali was rated by TripAdvisor as the top destination in the world. Bali has gone from a cheap exotic holiday for Australians to an international destination. It is one of the most talked about destinations on this earth, ranking in the top 10 on google searches.

I found Bali more expensive, more crowded than here in Phuket and i was there in the low low season. Compared to my last visit in 2002, it has been destroyed and i wont ever go back.

Good to know. Have thought about visiting Bali some time but maybe I'll pass. I prefer the less crowded places in SE Asia.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Tue Dec 19, 2017 7:29 pmI found Bali more expensive, more crowded than here in Phuket and i was there in the low low season. Cow will this affect Cambodia? I have a night planned.

I am not currently in Cambodia but I'm following medias there. Myself I don't think that the eruption would affect Cambodia at all, Bali is over 2500 km away. But it's not impossible that the ash cloud would travel that distance if the winds are strong. Just an educated guess, I'm not a meteorologist.

I hope you're not wrong.
Depending on severity of the explosion and wind speed and direction, it could affect Cambodia.

yeah it is pretty rare for air masses to cross the equator- given prevailing westerlies and coriolis force
unless a mega event like krakatau- my evening sunset view from Merak in Java for almost 3 years

Could make for spectacular sunsets ... I seem to remember another incident that cause picture-perfect sunsets for weeks ...
I think also very positive, sometimes negative blooms from all the ash, dependent on sulphur content, etc...

Not if there's a fire, not even if you hear the sound of a thud from my home and one week later there's a smell coming from there that can only be a decaying human body and you have to hold a hanky to your face because the stench is so thick that you think you're going to faint.
Even then, don't come knocking...Not for ANY reason.

Re: Bali Mount Agung Volcano Set to Blow Within 24 Hours
I spent 2-months (june & july) in Ubud central Bali & whilst its certainly 25% more expensive overall v Siem Reap its similar traffic wise at peak times, similar on cleanliness & had long term visa been easier I may have stayed on
I know the costal towns lack culture and are mainly Oz tourist ports but the island is far from ruined in my opinion and still well worth a visit even if just to tour Ubud the tiered fields and over to java to see the sulphur filled volcano
oh, and if you surf the south east coast is great
