Asia prepares for Trump

This week Donald Trump departs for his first trip to Asia as president of the United States.
He is scheduled to visit Japan, South Korea, China, and Vietnam and the Philippines over 13 days, his longest trip yet.

His trip starts in Northeast Asia where he will meet Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Xi Jinping — both of whom have just consolidated their political positions at home. In South Korea, President Moon Jae-in will be focused on repairing his relationship with Trump. In all three countries, the North Korean nuclear weapons program will be the top agenda item.

Trump will then attend the APEC summit in Da Nang in Vietnam with 20 other leaders from Asia Pacific economies, including President Putin of Russia. After that he will visit President Rodrigo Duterte in Manila, but it now appears he’ll skip the East Asia Summit leaders meeting in the Philippines to return home...

Donald Trump embarks on marathon tour of Asia

US President Donald Trump has embarked on an 11-day trip to Asia during which he will visit Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines.
It will be the longest tour of Asia by a US president in 25 years.

The trip comes at a time of heightened tensions with North Korea over its nuclear programme and missile tests.
Mr Trump is expected to show a united front with South Korea and Japan while pressing China to take a stronger line with Pyongyang...

The leaders of the two biggest economies in the world presented vastly different visions of the future, and their roles in the Asia Pacific region.

US President Donald Trump went first, addressing the packed audience at the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (Apec) summit in Vietnam, whose members bring about 60% of the world's GDP.

Defiant and bombastic, he said the US will no longer tolerate chronic trade abuses, and that free trade had cost America millions of jobs.

It was a speech signalling that Donald Trump is putting America first - but perhaps he is not as concerned about American leadership in the region.

It was the harshest language President Trump has used on his Asia trip on trade.

He repeated the statement he made in Beijing, saying that it's not the fault of countries like China - but instead previous administrations are to blame.

But President Trump was clear - he wants bilateral trade deals, and large, multilateral arrangements don't work for him.

This was a speech saying that America is open for business, but on its own terms.

President Trump received some applause during his speech, but nowhere near as much as Chinese President Xi Jinping.

He took on the role of the global champion of globalisation, saying it was irreversible.

President Xi also spoke about the digital economy, quantum science, artificial intelligence - presenting a vision of the future that is connected, and comprehensive...
