Re: Another mid eastern country (Syria) in trouble
Golan Heights are literally heights. Syrian land that overlooks Israeli towns and villages below. During times of peace, Syrians use artillery and rockets from the heights to rain death and destruction on Israelis, all the while with deniability of doing so from their own territory. In times of war, Syria sends troops to invade.
Golan is a small piece of Syria. Turkey also has a piece of Syria, a place to give the Kurds a land of their own. Right now, the offensive took land on the eastern side of Syria. They don’t control much of country west of the strip of land. The big question will Syria fractionate into smaller territories and get taken over? It was previously held together by military dictatorship.
But keep believing that the only democracy in the region are the only real criminals and murderers in the Middle East. The rest of the dictators and fundamentalist crazies are just pious saints.

Amid Syria’s ongoing developments, Israel has moved to secure the buffer zone and observation points in the Golan Heights to protect its settlements. Reports indicate that the Israeli army has entered #MountHermon from the Syrian side and advanced 14 kilometers into Syrian territory. Israeli officials have reportedly instructed ministers to refrain from publicly commenting on Syria without prior approval.
The Times of Israel confirms that the Israeli military has deployed forces to strategic locations within the demilitarized zone, positioning troops in key areas to ensure the safety of Golan Heights communities and Israeli citizens.
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

They need to be cautious. A demilitarized zone needs troops on both sides to enforce it. I haven't heard what is happening with the Syrian armed forces and if they have changed into civvies and melted away. Many of them are conscripts who are poorly paid and with low morale*. This will be their first chance in a long time to leave the army without reprisals.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 10:46 am

As long as Israel doesn't start shooting people, then this is a prudent step. Once the new regime gets a grip on the situation and provides personnel to maintain their side of the DMZ, there is no harm in Israel keeping order. If I were a Christian goat herder in the Golan Heights, I might prefer the Israelis being in charge rather than the new bosses in Damascus.

Turkey and its allies in Syria have been fighting the Kurds for a long time and are not interested in giving them a land of their own.newkidontheblock wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 8:53 am Turkey also has a piece of Syria, a place to give the Kurds a land of their own.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syrian_Democratic_ForcesThe Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) is a Kurdish-led coalition of U.S.-backed left-wing ethnic militias and rebel groups, and serves as the official military wing of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES; also unofficially known as Rojava). The SDF is allied to and supplied by the United States–led CJTF–OIR international alliance. Founded on 10 October 2015, the SDF claims that its mission is fighting to create a secular, democratic and federalized Syria. The SDF is opposed by Turkey, which claims the group has direct links to the PKK, which is recognized as a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States, the European Union, and some other countries.
https://www.cfr.org/expert-brief/what-r ... -civil-warTurkey’s ally among the rebels is the Syrian National Army (SNA), which, despite its name, is a wholly Turkish-owned entity. Since the defeat of ISIS, the Turks have been more concerned with the emergence of a Syrian-Kurdish entity in northern Syria led by the Syrian Democratic Forces, the SDF. The SDF, though a Syrian organization, has its roots in the Turkish-Kurdish insurgency. The United States decided to partner with the SDF when the Iraqi, Syrian, and Iraqi-Kurdish forces melted away at the height of the ISIS onslaught in 2014. This partnership was successful, and to this day, the United States maintains a force of roughly nine hundred soldiers in northern Syria in collaboration with the SDF to prevent the resurgence of ISIS.

Just to make that a bit clearer, here are the main groups that were active in Syria a few days ago and their aims:

Very sensible from Israel. Have a quick look at the CV of the 'rebel*' currently 'in charge' of Syria. Obviously, he has changed his name now to avoid those pesky Google searches. Shaved his beard and lost the military fatigues. Of course, a man can change his views lol. I am sure the 20 years of extremism and murder are in the past.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 10:46 am
