why are cows so expensive?

Post by diesel »

my new cowhouse is finish, bought 4 small pieces or grassland 4x 20x25m. Im now in banlung and as im back in kirivong(takeo) i go buy some cows.
My plan is to buy 2 cows 2-3 years old and 2 calfs.

but why are the prices of the cows so high in cambodia? a price for a calf is 500-600$ here. a cow 3 years old 1800$. and the locals pay also this kind off prices.

my plan is to start with 2 cows and 2 calf, the 2 cows so fast as possible get pregnant. so in 1 year 2 new calfs and in 1.5 year the '' calfs'' can also get pregnant.

owning 10 cows can make more more more as enough money to live in the provinces. i spend now 150$ every month (girlfriend and myself).
biggest problem with to much cows is that there is no enough green gras for feed, especially not in dry seasson, price of 1 ha land is 6500$( also a lot in compare with other province) And maybe 4 ha is enough for take care the 10 cows, but there is always the cambodian option to search greengrass and go walk with the cows.

i think raising cows can be a way to earn money in province, and its really not easy to find money in province, i live here now a while and finally is putting a lot money in something but a really low profit back.
growing potatos and selling in pp is also a option.

if somebody has good advice,,,,, you are welcoe

I salute your entrepreneurial spirit and at the same time wonder how you will ever really compete with local farmers? Your investment, assuming you buy the land too, is close to $30,000... that's a lot of cash to sink into cows that could all get sick and die in the first week of ownership. Why not, look at moving somewhere a bit more viable and starting a business there?

Whatever you choose, I wish you luck.

i only bought the 4 small plots. But as i start with 4 cows, and in 1.5 -2 year not sell the cows than i have 10 cows, or maybe i start with more cows, and than i most have more land.
But buy land in province is not a really big risk.prices stay same or growing, so its a investment and also for my future children :).
and offcourse there are more possibiltys with the land.
And i ike to live in provinces, i like the easy relaxing live and beautiful nature, and offcourse also many negative points, but thats everywhere.

I just finish my small house and cowhouse, so now i need something new to do, to not get bored. so my pln is to make a start with the cows and see how it goes and after a while as it goes well i can grow the number of cows and land.

Ia lot of locals here paid that kind of prices. Last weeks we asked different people how much they bought and sold the cows. So also the locals here got ripped off? i not bought yet a cow, but rhe last weeks i try to get some information of different sources, family, neighbours and friends of the family, and they all say the same price range. So thats why i post it here because the prices souds very high

Yep, they are good at that, it's easy to cheat people really. In Cambodia they just do a simply sum and double everything as standard for barang. Go to k440 and do a search you should get a thread about cows and their prices.
Of course there is a range of prices for calves and cows. Depends very much on the animal. 800 should be top dollar for a cow iirc.
Tread carefully.

yep a small cow/ calve is 300. I am no expert, try posting on Living In Cambodia forum. There are a lot of people trying to do the same thing as you on there. Just wanted to give you the heads up. Sounds a good life, just be careful.

i am not sure what kind of cow you guys are talking about. There are different types of cow in Cambodia, the bigger and the smaller. The bigger one like in the picture below is really expensive. It can be from $2000 up to $3000. For the smaller one is only $200 or $300.

Good luck for your project. i have never thought that barang could live in the province such a remote area.
