I've heard rumours that something big and imported cow related will be happening in Kampot soonish.
Also to the OP, beef is quite dear compared with other meats, although I can only guess the price of a slaughtered cow, with the meat, hide, offal and other bits taken into account. $2000+?

They will be bringing over NZ cattle and having a dairy farm and slaughterhouse.

I cross breed a couple of Santa Cruz cows with a Chianina bull, but ended up with calving problems, [ calves too big ], however when using a Chianina bull over older Friesian dairy cows the results were good calves that grew big and fast as the mother cows had plenty of milk and could also handle a adoptive calve at the same time.diesel wrote:I read a article about crossbreeding a brahman and a us santa cruz cattle. Re: why are cows so expensive?
The Ag Department had a similar trial breeding program on the farm I grew up on, Chianina over various milking breeds, trying to develop a drought tolerant milker. Same problems, calves too big and damaging the cow. Also, after some genetic modification, freakishly large and aggressive throwbacks.

Whilst I can understand the price of a cow being $2000, I still can't get my head around the , fact they are left free to wander along, across and in the middle of Rd 4, from Choam Chao all the way to SHK.
From what I've heard of the new venture it's going to be a sip 'em in, slit 'em up and ship 'em out operation, with exports being the main idea. I doubt, as has been stated that western breeds would last very long out in these pastures.

Re: why are cows so expensive?
Mostly as you see alot of cows on the fields or highway than its belong to a very rich man thats owns alotttt of hectares land. So he put couple of hundreds cow on his endless fields to graze. The familys that have 1-2-3-4 cows really care the cows. Never leave them alone and even lock the door of the cowhouse, because they afraid that somenody steal the cows. So big change that the land pn the way to sihanoukville belongs to 1 man. Maybe

If you missed out on a free cow last year, it's not to late to become a Muslim and get one of the 6,000 that are donated to Cambodia for the Eid al-Adha festival this year.
