why are cows so expensive?
Re: why are cows so expensive?
To be honest, i don't really think many khmer eat goat. i personally think that because we prefer eating pork, moreover goat meat is kidda expensive for us. There is nothing about culturally aversion.juansweetpotato wrote: What do Khmer think of goats Samouth? Praktou? Have they got any aversions to them culturally?

Re: why are cows so expensive?
There are a couple "goat soup" khmer restaurants on the high end of CT street in SHV.
My in laws go there for dinner once a month or so, I stop going myself as it wasn't much my taste but you can often see high end cars parked in front of them. I believe they must make a good business out of it.

Re: why are cows so expensive?
Returning to the original topic, I have confirmed with no less than 3 provincial acquaintances that a cow in calf if big, healthy and beautiful is $1200- 800.
A "man cow"can go from $1500 for a good one up to $3 or 4K for exceptional specimens.
AI is obviously the future.
OP, you do not have enough land to feed even a single beast on grass, so I guess you will employ a cow boy to graze them free.
Don't forget to collect the very valuable manure and compost it under cover from the rain.
I for one would be interested in how your enterprise is faring after a year.

Re: why are cows so expensive?
Are there any western-style piggeries in Bodge? The type that feed pigs hot mash twice a day?
Bodge: This ain't Kansas, and the neighbours ate Toto!
Re: why are cows so expensive?
Thanks frank lee bent. Yes i know i have by far not enough , but my house is 10 secondes walk to alot of hectares ricefields. 5 Months in a year the cows can graze in the fields, and the rest of the months i go collect grass, and rice left overs after harvests. Also in de mountains is enough green grass, also in dryseasson. I have time enough, and dont wanna get bored hele, and as i can earn money, its fine. I think 4 cows give a average profit of300- 400$ a month after 1-1.5 year. And as i goes well i can buy land. Only negative here is that people only earn small plots of land. So almost impossible to buy 1ha land in 1 time. But sometimes people sell theirand really cheap because of some health family or other problems. So patience patience and give everything the time l
Re: why are cows so expensive?
im thinkingto go for the expensive kind of cattle(600-800$ calve) because finally that earns also the most $$, only they need also alot more food. So i must buy green grass in some months.
and with a good bull can also earn money, a bull goes here for 20$ as another cow must become pregnant.
this kind of cows there the most in the village ( ps not mine chid)

I'm sure that most of the large restaurants at Prek Leap (the ones with live comedians) have Goat on the menu.Samouth wrote:To be honest, i don't really think many khmer eat goat.juansweetpotato wrote: What do Khmer think of goats Samouth? Praktou? Have they got any aversions to them culturally?

Re: why are cows so expensive?
Thanks for your reply. Feeding your cows on free grass is a good plan.
I would suggest you look into artificial insemination using either australian droughtmaster strains- or some of the brazilian lines of indian cattle.
There is enormous potential in breeding indian milk cattle.
this would address the crazy thinking that now prevails in the relatively new asian dairy industry of trying to use unsuitable european breeds in the tropics.
I can elaborate on this at some length if you wish?

Re: why are cows so expensive?
There are goat restaurants in the kingdom, but the majority of Cambodian don't eat it.
