Re: why are cows so expensive?
Actually I just learned that in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc. goat meat is also referred to as mutton - even though this is not correct in English, it is accepted in those countries, and therefore in some Asian countries. Goat meat is called chevon, but most English speakers just say 'goat' to mean the animal and it's meat.

Sorry stroppy you are wrong on this one. If you order a mutton curry in any Indian restaurant in Phnom Penh 90% of the time it will be goat meat.StroppyChops wrote:You'll find that mutton in ANY country is sheep meat.Samouth wrote:I think my knowledge about goat meat in Cambodia is really limited. second best cuisine after thaiSamouth wrote:haha so it is sheep meant, how about goat meant. The thing is that i really don't like indian food. I tried the curry it tastes terrible.StroppyChops wrote:You'll find that mutton in ANY country is sheep meat.Samouth wrote:I think my knowledge about goat meat in Cambodia is really limited. and just a notch above Mexican
I agree, most mutton curries are goat meat in SE asia unless ur eating in a very expensive Indian restaurant
I thought i posted this but seems to have disappeared,
Mutton is meat from a sheep older than a year. As opposed to lamb which is a sheep less than a year old (more tender than mutton).
Goat meat is from goats. However, they do have a similar texture and flavor.
Goat is really good BBQ as shish kabob, ate a lot of it in North Africa
Raise rabbits:
easy to take care of, cheap to feed ( do some aquaponics for your veggies)
they multiple quick ( hence the term fuck like rabbits)
can sell the rabbits in the market to kids ( there cute) and the meat is fantastic
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Not sure if you thought the smiley was taking the pee. It wasn't. It was a joke about my Cambodian cheese fetish. I was thinking all those French restaurants and fancy pants places would be buying in goats cheese at an even higher premium than French Roquefort.Duncan wrote:I think if there was a difference in price only because of the area,,, then people would be buying in the cheap area and transporting them to the other areas and selling them at a profit.Bitte_Kein_Lexus wrote:Yeah I also think you're looking in the wrong places. I guess it depends what kind of cow, but calves should be around $300, not $800... It really depends on the area though. Maybe the types of cows/prices are higher in Takeo.
juansweetpotato wrote:^ Good idea about the goats. Warning! They will eat absolutely anything! Should be a pretty premium coming in on cheese too.
The reason I suggest goat meat, instead of milk or cheese which Cambodians don't consume, is ,, look in any shop or supermarket and you will find milk for sale.,,, Now go and look for some goat meat that is for sale. There ain't any. If you have some for sale it will be the only goat meat for sale in Cambodia and you can name your own price you want.
Seriously good idea. Must have been tried before?
What do Khmer think of goats Samouth? Praktou? Have they got any aversions to them culturally?
