Avocado
Relatively cheap, the seedlings you can grow yourself, but 5-7 years before you will have fruit (my case: 6 years)

Durian
Seedlings are very expensive, and they need loads of water. 5-8 years beofre you have fruits. The trees need a lot of maintenance.

Cashew nuts
Easy crop, cheap seedlings, nuts in 2-3 years, but labor intensive to collect the nuts.

Papaya
Easiest of all, fruits in months, just drop some seeds and you'll have a tree in weeks. Only 50% will have fruit though (only the females?).

Jackfruit
Fruit in 1-2 years, relatively easy to grow, inexpensive

Banana
Labor intensive. After having fruit once the tree will die, and you have to take out the seedlings and replant them. If you do bananas, do the cheek-pong-mon (the small ones)

Whatever you choose, don't plant anything until the rainy season kicked in.
Thanks for your suggestions and analysis! I think we will plant some tamarind this year just for casual use. Maybe some avocado as well. Can avocado grow in normal tropical elevations?

As mentioned, thinking about cashews. Papaya is nice for personal use but hardly seems marketable (it's very cheap).

We'd love to do durian but for the reasons you mentioned. We have jackfruit already but it is not producing much fruit.

I am working on my partner's land during the Covid crisis. The land already has a fair number of mango trees on it, and there is a large amount of vacant space remaining. We're not really sure what we want to plant to use up the rest of the land. Pepper seems to be overproduced now, bananas are a possibility, jackfruit, cashews. We also considered planting a legume crop to fertilize the soil better.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Anyone have any experience planting that they learned from and what they would do differently this time?

Thanks!
Depends on irrigation, soil, elevation etc. So, where's the land, does it flood, have shade, etc?
We're setting up a system of water pipes pumped from a well. It's also next to an old canal. One part of the soil is very poor, it's like filler soil (used to fill in a pond). Another part is normal soil, seems good but I'm not sure. I don't think it really floods at all, the water runs off into adjacent rice fields or is already elevated. There is a shade on some of the land from existing trees.

Avocado seems to be mainly grown in the highlands.

Passion fruit? It's just a one year crop, and it could attract snakes, but decent revenues.

We have jackfruit al well, it's fast growing and bearing loads of fruits here after 3-4 years.

Thanks Kammakor, appreciate your feedback. I've been reading around about a lot of different options, but one of the hard parts is finding some of the things we want to plant. Are there any places that sell a wide variety of different things for planting? I believe there was a post on this subject a while back.

In the countryside you can find places selling seedlings, usually the local populairs. Hete in Ratanakiri you’ll find mainly cashewnut trees, mango trees, durian, etc. Most rubber companies seem to grow their own trees.

Thanks Kammekor, we have seen moto-pulled carts driving around and selling, that seems to be similar to what you are referring to. We bought durian, milkfruit, avocado, coconut from them. I guess I am looking for some more obscure items, but have no idea where to find them. Appreciate your advice!

Well, why not do what's been done since before mankind recorded history? Is the land way out in the country where it's desolate, nobody uses the land as a walkthrough, does it have moderate to full sun? If you said yes thrice read on. Best cash crop? Papaver somniferum: seeds to harvest in just 3 months.
Still here, in country...

Opium or weed. Low maintenance. High yield. Big money.
