Small farm, work permit and visas
Small farm, work permit and visas
My girlfriend and I are planning to start a small farm on her land in the provinces. The land is not very big, so we won't get rich, but it's our dream to live a more traditional life, away from the city and office jobs.
My biggest concern is about staying legally in the country, and working within the current laws. Are there any other farmers here? Are there any good ways to do this legally? Can we register as a company, and employ myself as a worker?
Any thoughts, experiences and tips would be greatly appreciated.

You are about to do what my wife and I did. Unfortunately our situations do not quite overlap since I am here on a retirement visa. I'll scout around and see if I can dig up some pertinent info for you. I assume your gf is Khmer.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

register as a sole trader; company reporting requirements are onerous.
maybe first just try to get a letter from your gf saying she is employing you as a farm research consultant.
so far, letters are all that have been required for many.

I have done the same in Thailand and Cambodia. But now you need a work permit here. It can be obtained for the job.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

Re: Small farm, work permit and visas
yeah an employer letter is all you need for the wp now with most agents, also a letter from the sangkat that says you reside (own land ?) there. they have accepted GH addresses in the past.
further away from PP, the easier it gets. use an agent.
kampot is easy.
i believe SV as well.

Thank you! Yes, my girlfriend is Khmer, and hopefully soon to be wife, if her family agrees to an unofficial wedding, initially.
Thanks for the ideas. I must add, I'm not very worried about the situation short term, but for a long term solution, I'd like to be among the people that aren't worried every time there are rumors about visa law changes.frank lee bent wrote: ↑Sat Nov 18, 2017 4:02 pm register as a sole trader; company reporting requirements are onerous.

When you say it can be obtained for the job, I'm assuming you mean it can be obtained when we are registered as a company, or sole trader, as frank lee bent suggested?

you may not even need to register as a sole trader.
clear it up asap and then you are covered- don't overthink it lest your questions give the authorities an excuse to milk you.

Re: Small farm, work permit and visas
Without going into much dtail at this point I feel that Frank is on the right track in his previous post. However I would like more details for reasons which will become clear later.
What are the ages of you and your wife.?
Is the land where you plan to farm in or near the village where her family lives?
Do you plan on having children?
My reasons for my questions will be clearly explained upon receiving your answers.

Re: Small farm, work permit and visas
my friend has just started a new family book with his gf as a bit of advance legalistic chess.
hehe.
all you need right now for the wp
letter of employment (from your wife should do )
sangkat letter of residency
health check ( waived if use agent )
if you try and do it yourself they will place obstacles in your way in PP.
in the provinces they are not hip abt how to do that obfuscatory stuff, so will require little docs.
