Cashew growers await August price spike
Van Socheata | Publication date 18 April 2023 | 21:29 ICT

In the first three months of the year, Cambodia exported a total of 233,050 tonnes of raw cashew nuts worth about $320 million to Vietnam, said the Cashew nut Association of Cambodia (CAC). According to the association, the figure is down 12.95 per cent compared to the same period last year.

“This decline is not a cause for concern, as the association has been forecasting data since the beginning of the year, and exports have fallen due to a drop in wet grain prices at the end of March. Therefore, CAC informed our members to stop selling and drying produce, because we expect a jump in prices around August,” said CAC president Uon Silot.

Silot added that according to CAC, world cashew yields have not increased, so members of the association who have access to warehouses have begun drying cashew nuts. The association has paid close attention to Vietnamese exports, as they make up almost 100 per cent of the kingdom’s exports.

According to Silot, cashew nuts are a high value-added agricultural product with a long-term outlook, which means that demand for this type of luxury good is increasing. In Cambodia, the most popular cashew nut is the M23 variety, which is large in size, and delicious. On average, a hectare of cashews can yield 1.49 tonnes.

Raw cashews sell for about 1$ per kilo, 1,10$ when dried, the value the Association comes up with looks inflated to me.

At the same time, Nok Bunthon, a grower and president of the Kampong Thom Cashew Nut Association, said that farmers in his province sell more wet nuts than dried due to weather conditions and a lack of drying facilities.

“Wet cashews currently command 4,300 riel per kg. Prices are falling compared to last year, but farmers are not overly concerned.

“Brokers say the cashew nuts harvested this time were of poor quality, with damage due to worms and insects. The early rains caused worms to lay eggs earlier in the year and pierce the seeds. In Kampong Thom, it is difficult to dry because of the rain and the inclement weather. Those who have large plantations are losing a lot of potential profit while they wait eight months for sales to improve,” he added.

I'm a bit surprised by this article.

First, about the early rains and worms, as this year has been really dry and i've had way less worms inside my seeds than 2022.
Compared to last year, my harvest has been 1/3 better this year even if i've cut some of my old big trees to plant new ones.

Second, prices have been higher this year, starting in my province from 4300r for "normal" to 4800r to M23 and staying around 3500-4000r until almost the end. Last year, prices dropped early in the season to 3000-3300r.

Maybe Kompong Thom province has endured heavy rainfalls in the last 4-5 months ? Sounds weird.

“National Cashew Policy 2022-2027” Officially Launched
AKP Phnom Penh, June 15, 2023 -- “National Cashew Policy 2022-2027” has officially been launched to increase productivity and competitiveness of Cambodia’s cashew, one of the country’s priority agro-industrial crops.

The event was presided over by H.E. Pan Sorasak, Minister of Commerce, at the ministry office yesterday afternoon.

With 106 pages, the new policy which can be downloaded via https://cutt.ly/twrzVWOD was endorsed by the Council of Ministers on Jan. 13, 2023, and was aimed to develop cashew production, processing, and marketing to be more competitive to ensure sustainability and economic diversification, and to transform Cambodia into an important producer and supplier of cashew nuts for local, regional and global markets in the near future, the minister stressed.

H.E. Pan Sorasak was also optimistic that the “National Cashew Policy 2022-2027” would become a roadmap and an effective driving force for the enhancement of cashew productivity and competitiveness in terms of yields and quality, diversification, processing, exports, and added value to all stakeholders in the value chain in order to attract more foreign direct investments by maintaining old markets and looking forwards to new sustainable markets which would create more job opportunities and added value in contribution to alleviating poverty, reducing migration and boosting the national economic growth.

Taking the opportunity, H.E. Pan Sorasak thanked all stakeholders for making the new policy possible, and requested development partners, particularly CAP-RED programme, GIZ CRAS project, HEKS Cambodia, Harvest III, CIRD, and CPSA, for their continued support to the policy.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, in 2022, cashew production covered 435,733 hectares of cultivated area, of which 330,861 hectares were harvested, giving 508,283 tonnes of yields. Some 471,520 tonnes of fresh cashew nuts and 1,557 tonnes of processed ones were exported last year.

Climate Change Hits Cashew Nut Yields
By Chhum Chantha July 24, 2023 4:14 PM
PHNOM PENH – Over the past four years, climate change is believed to be responsible for having reduced Cambodia’s cashew nut production by 30 to 40 percent.

By making the weather less predictable and changing rainfall patterns in the region, it has made cashew nut production more complicated.

Cambodian farmers suffered the most in 2022. In addition to unregular rainfalls, cashew growers had to deal with the war in Ukraine, which caused the price of agricultural inputs, such as gasoline and fertilizers, to surge.

Discouraged, some farmers cut down their cashew trees to start new crops on their land.

Satellite imageries show that the surface area dedicated to cashew nut production in Cambodia decreased from 800,000 hectares in 2021 to 700,000 at the end of 2022. Nevertheless, it is estimated that 30,000 hectares have been replanted since then.

Uon Silot, the president of the Cambodian Cashew Nuts Association, said that, even though the surging price of agricultural inputs doesn’t help, climate change has had a negative impact on cashew yields in the last four years.

“Climate change has seriously affected the Cambodian cashew sector for the last four years,” he said. “2022 and 2023 are among the worst years, with unusual rainfalls observed not only in Cambodia but all over the region.”
