I'm sure you could buy at the market but I've not seen any lately. Instead all the mini marts are selling the expensive "Tong Garden" bags from Thailand, with Cambodian (I presume) cashews inside. Why someone not took out the middle man and packaged and sold here and exported too?

The reason why many products are imported here is because Cambodians haven't quite got the consistent supply thing down yet. Cashews are nowhere near consistent quality and quantity levels for companies to establish a business on.

Similar for coffee as even the "Cambodian Arabica" is Vietnamese but repackaged as Mondulkiri Arabica often times. Beans are mostly grown in Vietnam however, not here.

Big Decline in Cambodian Cashew Production

Cashew sector pared down as farmers change crops
3 September 2018
Cashew nut production in the Kingdom declined by more than 50 per cent in the three years leading up to last year, as farmers followed the market by switching to other crops, figures from the Ministry of Agriculture indicate.

Data from the general directorate of agriculture shows that Cambodia produced 295,791 tonnes of cashew nuts in 2014 with exports reaching 270,696 tonnes.

However, production and exports dropped year by year. Last year, production dropped to 142,773 tonnes with total exports standing at just 73,179 tonnes, a decline of 51.73 per cent and 72.96 per cent respectively compared to the previous three years.

The main markets for the Kingdom’s cashews are in Vietnam, China and India.

The director-general of the general directorate of agriculture at the Ministry of Agriculture Hean Vanhan said on Sunday that the decrease indicated instability in the sector as farmers were switching to others crops as they pursue market demands.

Cashew nuts see 5% spike in price at harvest season
22 February 2019

Cashew nut prices saw a five per cent drop compared to last year due to more supply than demand at the beginning of the harvest season in Kampong Thom province – the Kingdom’s largest regional producer of the nut – according to provincial authorities.

Kampong Thom provincial Department of Commerce director Srun Heng said prices fluctuated due to increasing yield and quality.

“Supply being greater than demand and the cashew nuts’ quality are the main issues dictating the price,” he said.

Heng said while Cambodia has good cashew nut production potential, there should be a processing factory as it would stabilise prices in the sector.

“We can ensure [good] prices for farmers. We should at least have a processing factory – it’s better than merely selling raw material to brokers,” he said, adding that despite many companies studying investment potential in the Kingdom’s cashew nut sector, no ventures have materialised.

Cashew nut prices currently start at 5,000 riel ($1.26) per kg compared to 6,000 to 7,000 riel last year, according to Heng.

Story of Change: Cashew nut
Bin Savoeurn March 28, 2019
Improvement of Indigenous Communities’ Income Makes Their Better Livelihoods

Ratanakiri province is in the northeast of Cambodia with the rich soil which is potential for the cashew tree crops to be grown widely by the indigenous peoples in warm and humid climatic regions. However, they also live to depend on selling cashew nuts for their livelihoods. But they have not much been aware of technical knowledge of cashew nuts yet and they mostly grow local cashew trees with no technical knowledge of cashew trees. They, therefore, get low yields of cashew nut products.
Seeing that the indigenous communities are in the requirements of the technical knowledge of cashew trees, ICCO donor in partnership with NTFPs has launched Land and Economic Security for Indigenous Peoples (LESIP) project in 30 villages, 7 communes, two districts (Ochum &Veurnsai) of Ratanakiri province to implement its activities by providing training workshops on technical knowledge of cashew nut production to the indigenous peoples so that they receive the high yield of cashew nut products.

Japan provides $439,261 for organic cashew farming
The Japanese government has today provided $439,261 to a Ja-based NGO to carry out a project offering support to small holders through contract farming of organic cashew nuts through Agriculture Cooperatives.

The grant was signed on Friday between Japanese Ambassador Mikami Masahiro and Suzushima Chihoko, the assistant project manager of IVY.

According to an embassy press release today, IVY will support local farmers and local agriculture cooperative in Preah Vihear so that farmers can produce and sell more value-added organic cashew nuts and get more income to escape poverty.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Mr Masahiro said the project will offer farmers knowledge and techniques of organic cashew nuts, and integrated transportation through the farming community.

“We hope that farmers’ income would increase effectively and targeted farmers could grow organic cashew nuts with stability,” he said.

Ms Chihoko said IVY will expand its target to a total of 11 agricultural communities in Preah Vihear province, noting that poverty rate in the province is now at 37%, the highest area in the Kingdom.

Good morning guys,
I would like to know if some of you (or relatives) have cashew nuts farms and how much/kg you are selling now.
Here in Tbong Khmum province, prices for small nuts have decreased from 4900r/kg at the beginning of February to 3500r/kg now mid-March ; bigger nuts (M23 variety) from 5900 to 4400r/kg. And we're only in the middle of the harvest period...
Are you experimenting the same situation in other provinces ? First, I've been told that low prices were maybe the results of the closure of vietnamese borders (just a few kilometers from my farm), but i can't find any official information confirming this. A few months ago, government wrote that prices this year should be in the 5-6000r range per kilogram.

Thanks !
