Dozens of cattle perish due to blackleg disease

An outbreak of blackleg disease has killed dozens of cattle in Svay Rieng province’s Chantrea district while more than 80 others have become sick, officials said yesterday.

The outbreak began on August 12 during adverse weather, such as downpours, with dozens of cattle dead and falling sick.

Yin Sopheap, chief of Chantrea district veterinary office, said 25 cattle succumbed to the infectious disease in recent days, with others still falling sick of the disease.

Soppheap said some farmers reported it to vets so that treatment could be administered.

The spread of blackleg, which causes cattle loss of appetite and swellings on the hips and shoulder, has not yet eased with more than 80 cattle being sick, he said.

Officials urged farmers to report their sick animals to vets so that they receive treatment.
