9 December 2017
Pork prices tumble to unsustainable level say pig farmers.
Pig breeders are complaining that they can no longer make a living because the price of pork has dropped to 5,300r a kilogram. From 6,000 to 7,000 riels per kilogram, prices in November and December fell to 5,200 to 5,600 Riels. This is not enough to cover costs.
At the same time, the buying price of live pigs has risen. As a result, many farmers are going out of business and workers are migrating to look for other work.

Vietnamese Pork Impacts On Cambodian Local Livestock Businesses
Thu Dec 07, 2017 2:26 pm
Local pig producers continued to call on the government to take strict control of Vietnam's imported pigs as a large number of pigs imported from Vietnam caused the local pig farmers to go bankrupt.

Since April 2017, local pig farmers have repeatedly called on the government to introduce an intervention policy to impose a tight control on the import of Vietnamese pigs. As a result of the large importation of Vietnamese pigs, cost of local pig livestock have become lower than those of imports. The Cambodia Animal Husbandry Association recently held a press conference to seek government interference again.

The head of the association pointed out that since 2017, a large number of Vietnamese pigs were imported to Cambodia, causing great losses to local pig farmers. The market price of imported pigs have dropped to 5000-6000 Riel (about US$1.25-1.5) a kilogram, while the local pig cost remains at 7000 Riel (about US $ 1.75) leading to 50% of pig farmers suspending their farming of pigs.

The association demanded that the government take measures to prohibit imported pigs from selling below the local cost of pigs and to prohibit the smuggling of pigs by motorcycles and cars.

The association said that the Ministry of Agriculture allows only quotas for importing 1,250 hogs per day, but at least 1,500 to 1,800 hogs are illegally imported into Cambodia every day.

The association has submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture, General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and General Administration of Customs their request for the imposition of stringent requirements for importing pigs, but did not receive any reply. Pig producers said they will keep track of imported pigs and look for solutions from the government ministries concerned.

Cambodia imports 1,500 pigs from Thailand per day amid ban of import from Vietnam
Source: Xinhua| 2019-05-21 19:08:36|Editor: xuxin

PHNOM PENH, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia has imported up to 1,500 pigs from Thailand a day, as a ban on pig imports from Vietnam is still in place due to African swine fever outbreak, an animal health chief has said.

"Currently, we don't import pigs from Vietnam because we worry that they will carry the disease to other provinces (of Cambodia), so we take pigs from Thailand, where there is no outbreak of the disease," said Tan Phannara, director general of the General Directorate of Animal Health and Production, on Monday.

"We need to import between 1,000 and 1,500 pigs (a day)," he said, adding that a kilogram of live pig costs 11,000 riel (2.75 U.S. dollars).

According to the official, between 4,000 and 5,000 pigs are consumed every day in Cambodia.

Cambodia ordered a ban on the imports of pigs from Vietnam since March, and in early April, the country reported its first outbreak of African swine fever in backyard pigs in Ratanakkiri province's O'Yadav and O'Chum districts that border Vietnam.

However, the virus has not spread to other areas.

CEO News note: Have put this article on this old thread to compare prices then and now, and because it's interesting to see the previous complaints from Cambodian pig breeders about cheap Vietnamese pork. Note that a (live) Thai pig is 11,000 riel a kilo right now, while the Vietnamese pigs were going for 5000-6000 Riel a kilo according to the post above this from Dec 2017.
Does anyone know if the market price of pork has risen since the Swine Fever outbreak and the Thai imports ?

The other thread on the recent African Swine Fever outbreak is here : newsworthy/cambodia-alert-african-swine ... 27572.html
