I thought that when I arrived four years ago. I had friends who where doing well here with pig breading. Cutting the story short, Thailand banned the import of pigs from Cambodia. Thai imports to Cambodia bought down the price of pork. Small Khmer farmers can not compete.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

mong reithy has been in this business for many years.
i would imagine it is the genetics he intends to sell rather than the meat . IOW breeding stock.
i recall about 7 years ago some critter got into one of his farms down near Kampot, at the foot of Bokor and killed about 30 or more young weaner pigs.
most likely culprit was said to be a clouded leopard, but all the Khmer said it was a tiger :-).

Pork and chicken are mostly dominated by CP and Betagro- giantly successful vertically integrated companies who started as feed millers.
now they do it all- aquaculture, poultry, pigs with contract grow ops and the product sold as fried chicken in kiosks or ready to eat frozen supermarket meals. pork and chicken production here is highly risky due to the large neighbors who periodically glut their local markets with overproduction.

CP in particular has carved out huge markets in India and southern China

Reciprocity is needed! If the Khmers banned Thai pork the profits of the Cambodian companies would rise.

My SO's sister can't grow enough mushrooms...

I have given a lot of thought to raising bees for honey production. It's pricey and never goes bad.

avocado makes pretty good honey in quantity, and greatly benefits from honeybee pollination with increased fruit set.
coffee and macadamia too!

Glad we agree on something. Couldn't vertical integration also be described as a monopoly?
In microeconomics and management, vertical integration is an arrangement in which the supply chain of a company is owned by that company. Usually each member of the supply chain produces a different product or (market-specific) service, and the products combine to satisfy a common need. It is contrasted with horizontal integration, wherein a company produces several items which are related to one another. Vertical integration has also described management styles that bring large portions of the supply chain not only under a common ownership, but also into one corporation (as in the 1920s when the Ford River Rouge Complex began making much of its own steel rather than buying it from suppliers)
See crook!!!

The problem with pigs is that besides competing with lower-priced imports, they are susceptible to all sorts of illnesses and tend to keep fucking dying all the time.

I think chickens are worse, but yes, the loss of a pig would be a bigger hit.
