Japan pledges nearly $900,000 to improve Kingdom’s agriculture
The Japanese government has donated a total of $890,471 for the development of irrigation systems, maternal and child healthcare and youth capacity building in the Kingdom.

The grant contract was signed this week between Japanese ambassador Masahiro Mikami and the representatives of the said sectors.

A budget of $85,019 will be allocated for the first project, said Mr Mikami, which will focus on the development of irrigation systems aimed at enhancing agriculture in the Preah Vihear eco-village.

The money will be given to the Nongovernmental Organisations (NGOs)Pride of Asia Preah Vihear Association Japan to support the construction of reservoirs and water facilities in the province’s eco-village. The association’s representative Noritada Morita said farmers in the area will benefit from the project because it will increase agricultural production (especially in the dry season), enhance agricultural technology and improve facility management for sustainable regional development.

“Most of the villagers in Preah Vihear province migrated from other areas, so they should be educated regarding agricultural technology in order to lift them out of poverty,” said Morita.

The Japanese have also expressed an interest in raising tilapia in Cambodia. It seems that they want to make "fish products" with them.

Japanese Firm Conducting Study on Investment in Aquarium Industry in Cambodia
Phnom Penh, March 20, 2020 --
A Japanese firm has been conducting a study on investment possibility in raising Tilapia - a freshwater fish species - in Cambodia, according to JICA.

The information was shared by JICA representative in Cambodia in a meeting held here on Mar. 19 with H.E. Veng Sakhon, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries.

The investment will focus on fish product processing for export to Japan’s market, the representative pointed out.

H.E. Veng Sakhon welcomed the investment, saying that it will create new jobs and contribute to reducing fish catching from natural lakes and rivers.

Tilapia are already a big farmed fish here, albiet pretty low-tech.
Great idea in theory - and for japans insatiable desire for fish. They have overharvested and cheated on marine treaties for years. Still do.
Problem is farmed fish usually require 4-5 times their weight in "rubbish" fish for feed.
Those rubbish fish are often juvenile big fish, or are crucial parts of the natural food chain.
Hopefully new non-fish fish foods will be developed, there is a lot of research going on for this at present.

Cambodia signs MoU with Japan’s Yamato Green for ‘safe vegetable’
Thursday, 16 July 2020 13:23

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Cambodia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japan’s Yamato Green on the development of the ‘safe vegetable’ sub-sector for the domestic market and export.

The MoU was signed for various purposes. The deal will strengthen the Cambodia-Japan friendship and cooperation with agricultural sector development.

Secondly, the contract will strengthen and expand investment cooperation and develop the production of vegetable cultivation processing, packaging exports to the domestic and overseas markets through the use of technology from Japan.

In addition, the agreement will help improve the quality of vegetable safety and the continuity of supply to meet the needs or according to consumer and export market preferences. The pact will enhance production capacity (use of value-added chain and market trends) and the use of inputs.
