need to have some engineer weigh in on that. Most of those buildings are cemented over brickwall, and MAYBE they put load bearing walls in the RIGHT place sometimes? Wonder if they used rebar with wire screen in the roof slab? If so that SHOULD hold up a LOT.
Find a building, really one should want to donate space for free produce, and to steal any ideas (you could try and GIVE them this knowledge, but they would be deaf to it, but if it shows to work someone will steal it

Obviously why water tanks are stored over load bearing structures like wall joints and stairwells depending on weight, but otherwise a great use of rooftops. I get really nervous around rooftop pools and spas!

The water reservoir tanks on the top of the new houses in my area are all 2,000l. One l of water weighs aprox 1 kg. I just weighed a 20 l bucket of water and it was 20 kg ,, therefor a 2,000 liter tank weighs 2,000 kg = 2 tonn.

I don't think anyone would steal a hydroponics grow concept because it requires a lot of smarts to balance the pH of the water and a balanced nutrient input.

Selection of media grow medium, supplemental lighting, load weight, style of water input.

There is a lot going on vs soil but produce output compared to a small footprint managed grow area is amazing!

Cash crops in lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, whatever herb is awesome. The reservoir doesn't need to be massive if you automate water replacement. (think toilet tank float for top up)

I've got a fair bit of land out of PP and have been looking to set up something like this (I got as far as downloading the books/video from aquaponics.au).

Finances mean I'm stuck in PP all week and often at weekends too, so I'd love to have a chat some time.

pH is pretty easy to control no nutrients needed, that's hydropnics, cocanut husks for grow medium and no supplemental light need here and rain water is abundant and easy to store. There is a formula for the size and amount of fish and the size of the grow beds. You seem to be talking about hydroponics not aquaponics

How do the fish cope with the husk residue in the water, any downsides? Does it need any prep (drying, etc) before it can be used as a medium? Would crushed coconut shell be better/worse?

There is none they use plants, like cat tail, that filter all that out and since it probably floats the pick ups for retuning water can be adjusted. Also there are simple sand or gravel filter that can be made if needed,
